I didn't take it personally, internet Mom. If I did, this site would give me high blood pressure (not to mention having to deal with Carlyle on a daily basis). I wrote the long screed because I honestly thought you were worth the time to try to explain at length how I felt about it. Most people I would have blown off with a quick quip or something. I hope that helps put it in perspective, Ma.
As far as what I recommend, here are the shows I love the most/still watch:
Lost (despite a slower, but not bad, second season, the best show on TV)
Arrested Development (perfect three seasons)
Star Trek: TNG and TOS
Babylon 5 (cheap and smart and great but skip the last season...everything is already wrapped up and they just had nothing else left to say)
The X-Files (Despite a wretched last few seasons and no satisfying end)
Buffy and Angel (as aforementioned of course)
Firefly (by the creator of Buffy and Angel, natch but I know SCADS of people who hate Buffy and Angel and are RABID fans of Firefly)
Battlestar Galactica (Who knew? Damn this is good)
The Venture Brothers (Cartoons for the uber geeky like me. This show is brilliant)
The Shield (Best cop show on TV probably ever. Michael Chiklis is probably my fave antihero.)
Dexter (Only two seasons under it's belt and still shockingly good. Best opening titles sequence of any show ever made)
Six Feet Under (Took me a few eps to get into it, but once I did I rocketed all the way through to the end. Saddest and best final five minutes of a last episode of a show ever)
30 Rock (I avoided this at first because I didn't think Tracy Morgan was funny at all, but now it's like crack and Tina Fey has become my favorite female comedy writer)
Monty Python's Flying Circus (Best sketch comedy show...ever)
Mr. Show (Second best sketch comedy show...ever)
Moonlighting (Those first three seasons are amongst the most brilliant on TV ever. The chemistry literally explodes between Cybill Shepard and Bruce Willis. And then it turned into a boring soap opera)
The Spectacular Spider-Man (Only one half season so far and it's already the best animated Spider-Man series yet, treating it like a mix of the old Stan Lee/Steve Ditko era books and the new Ultimate series)
Batman: The Animated Series (and not that new "The Batman" crap. This is pretty much the high water mark of animated superhero fare. Awesome writing.)
Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls (Two amazing and slightly morbid fantasy shows that died WAY WAY before their time. The writer is now making the beautiful and quirky...)
Pushing Daisies (...and you can tell. Just as good if not better. Let's hope people actually watch this one,)
Twin Peaks (yeah, yeah, it fell apart at the end but for a season and a half there, this was one of the most fascinating things ever put on tv. I re-watch it regularly)
Dr Who (Either you're a fan, or you have no idea why anyone would ever enjoy this. Guess which one I am.)
Rescue Me (Bitingly funny, tear jerkingly sad, and sometimes at the same time. Dennis Leary is forgiven for previous transgressions because of how smart and well-made this show is)
Farscape (The Jim Henson company make a mythology-rich in depth sci-fi show set on the other side of the universe. Those muppets look twenty times as convincing as the CG aliens in the SW prequels.
Breaking Bad (I don't know if this will keep going or not, but this DARK tale about a family man/chemistry teacher who has inoperable cancer who takes up making and selling crystal meth so his family isn't bankrupted by his illness, is powerful stuff)
Opinions, opinions.
I thought Xena was mainly throwaway television personally. It's a mistake to throw Buffy into that same category and it has to do with the way Joss Whedon wrote the characters and the arcs he puts them through as well as the genuinely funny dialogue. I don't know what you expect me to say from the 'music is bad' comment. Obviously I ENTIRELY disagree and the existence of Buffy sing-a-long screenings across the country that sold out instantly (until Fox put the kibosh on them for reasons still unclear) tells me I'm not the only one. I listen to the soundtrack regularly as do quite a number of folks I know and aside from taste differentials, I can assure that the soundtrack is not "bad" as you say. In fact it's one of the catchiest things for me in my recent memory. More importantly the lyrics are extremely profound in the CONTEXT of the series. The dramatic elements that were going on with the running story are so integral to the episode that trying to understand why some things in it are as touching as they are is impossible to do if watching it out of its place in the series. This might be a problem if it was the separately released Buffy Movie or something, but its not and was never intended to be.
Buffy is the high level of television doing action comedy for me and for many others. There's a helluva good reason Whedon's name is held in such high regard by so many. I don't understand why you would say that Xena started sucking so therefore all fantasy based TV must also suck. I'm completely baffled by your logic and it's a shame you're letting yourself miss out on so much great entertainment (certainly not just Buffy either) based on a faulty premise.
Awe! that sucks about your car. I don't even drive, i don't even have a permit lol. And that weekend is the same weekend that i won free tickets to Knotts Scary Farm. So i can't make this party, but prolly the next one, as soon as i found out how far someones gonna have to drive, lmao.

BTW, I'm going as Brock Sampson so you don't have to worry about me showing too much thigh or anything. Thanks, Mom.

How's that?
