Carlyle Recommends: The Birth of Anime - Princess Iron Fan

Hey gang - don't normally get around these parts, but wanted to share something with you that I found. I usually don't cross promote the sites I work for - but one of them has free legally streamable movies. And while most of the time they are either indie films or public domain, this weeks (presumably public domain) film is PRINCESS IRON FAN - Japan's first feature length animated film. Borrowing heavily from Disney at the time and definitely showing its budget, this film is an interesting look at the birthplace of Anime.

It's a fantasy film based upon a classic Japanese story. It's an odd duck, I'll tell you that - but definitely worth the watch for film history bufs or animation fans. You'll need Realplayer to view it. You can find it here:

Hey, THANKS for the heads up MDS. I need to read up on the history of this thing now. Sounds like there's a story involved.

99% of the people who watch Dragonball don't know anything about the Monkey King either.

I've heard people call Barefoot Gen and Grave of the Fireflies to be saddest Japanese animated films ever made considering their similar subject. However, I found Barefoot Gen more shocking than sad because they actually SHOW the horrifying consequences of the bombing and just deliver one bomb shell after another until you're so exhausted from all the bad stuff happening. Still a VERY GOOD movie though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors was Japan's first feature length animated film. It was a 1944 black and white war propaganda film that depicted the Japanese navy as cute animals and their western enemies as evil ogres.

Probably not the greatest subject matter for Japan's first animated film, but it is what it is.

It may seem a little harsh, until you realize the first full length motion picture ever made in America glorified the Ku Klux Klan and caused rioting in Boston and Philadelphia, was banned in Chicago, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Denver, St. Louis, and Minneapolis, and directly inspired countless violent crimes to be committed against black people and other minorities.
