I actually liked this for all the wrong reasons, it was highly amusing, I nearly wet myself at the things that were supposed to scare you and Mark Whalberg trying to act intelligent was the funniest thing I've seen all year I give it a high matinee but only because it made me laugh and for all the wrong reasons!!
I would go with a very low rental for this crap. M. Night hasn't done a truly good film in years. He started off as the next Hitchcock and now he has practically become a joke. I mean this guy has proven that he's extremely talented so I'm not sure what the deal is. Maybe he should try directing other peoples screenplays for a while. His writing his really poor in this one. As the review said, in places it was just funny. The twist of what is "happening" really is one of the worst concepts I've heard recently. Even Hitchcock's The Birds had a better concept. Or maybe is wasn't The Birds concept that was so good so much as it was the direction. The direction in The Happening is mediocre at best. The acting is pretty terrible for the most part. Mark Wahlberg was so wooden that I was surprised he could move. Zoe Deschanel was so hard to watch. John Leguizamo was the only actor to show any depth in this whole film. Oh and what was up with the old lady near the end? The film started out pretty good and interesting but quickly falls to crap after the first half an hour. M. Night really needs to take a breather and think carefully about his next project. Something he apparently didn't do for this movie.
I don't know what people are talking about!!! This movie was great, Mark Wahlberg and John Leguizamo are great and create a great horror atmosphere. The story is a little dull and weird but overall it's misterious and fun. No doubt it's worth watching a couple times so it's a buy! MATINEE for me.
