Can't believe I've lived in Korea for four years and have only seen Old Boy now. What a messed up movie...

The only other Korean film I can say that gets a little too arty at the end is Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, and I haven't seen the 'Fade to B&W version' where it makes more sense apparently. I Saw The Devil is pretty badass for a movie and remarkably sad for a film (if you make a distinction between the terms), completely engrossing and thought provoking, and almost my favorite Korean flick. If I hadn't seen Memories Of Murder, it'd be my favorite.

haha true, but things like 'dongchim', the relationships between folk, the way they eat in restaurants, choco pies, little things pop up that grounds the films in more of a reality I am familiar with now. Thats what I thought anyway...

I think had I seen these movie before I came, I would've care more about the culture. All I picked up more of in the movie was the use of the "Shibal" - like the ONLY Korean curse word.

I know what you mean, most of the Korean flicks I have seen were watched before I moved here. You will get more out of them knowing little bits of the culture. I rewatched JSA not long ago and picked up on loads of stuff that I could never have before living here. I fyou want any recommends gimmie a shout!

Maybe you're right, Octo. I've lived here for so long, but I'm pretty turned off by nearly every aspect of the culture; it's not like Japan or China at all. Maybe the movie industry'll save me. I think I'm gonna go for "I Saw The Devil" next.

The last part of Chucky's post can be applied to a lot of Korean film's, that and melodrama... their industry has grown into a weird amalgam of Hollywood and Euro arthouse. You really should watch more!

Bittersweet Life's a gangster film. A pretty solid one too, even if it does get a little too arty toward the end and has a notable hiccup of internal consistency.

This marks the 3rd Korean film I've seen. Bittersweet isn't one of them. What's it about?
