From a purely linguistic standpoint, I find the term "African American" extremely clunky and awkward. "Black" sounds much nicer and, I think, works better overall.

Probably because it's patronizing and really doesn't make much sense. Your ancestors are from Africa, but that can be said of everyone. Nobody calls white people European Americans.
