Pixar does tend to take typical storylines and put a twist of them. They made a mildlife crisis story crossed with a superhero parody, they also made a buddy movie with toys. But making a girl wanting to not conform to the stereotype set in Scotland doesnt scream Pixar.

Actually the whole wanting to not be a woman stereotype back-story doesn't just belong to Mulan. Besides, its the MOTHER who seems to want to keep that stereotype, not the father. Trust me when I say this makes a BIG difference.
