But the thing about the first four or so seasons was that the hilarity of the episodes was always set in a larger social context. Take the episode where Spongebob and Patrick raise the clam like two fathers - satire of traditional family values, presentation of a same-sex parental relationship, commentary on the hardships of raising a child. Almost all the episodes had something to say about society. Now, it's just dumb humor for dumb humor's sake. At least, last time I checked, which might have been a couple years ago now.
