Indeed, Spongebob has become the very thing the haters have always thought it was. But the thing about the first four or so seasons was that the hilarity of the episodes was always set in a larger social context. Take the episode where Spongebob and Patrick raise the clam like two fathers - satire of traditional family values, presentation of a same-sex parental relationship, commentary on the hardships of raising a child. Almost all the episodes had something to say about society. Now, it's just dumb humor for dumb humor's sake. At least, last time I checked, which might have been a couple years ago now.
