Believe me I totally get that treatment of women in arab countries does not neccessarily equate to Muslim doctrine anymore than Jerry Fallwell's interpretation of the bible is accurate for all Christians. I'm aware I came off badly there but when you're just throwing out comments when everybody is getting their drank on, these sorts of things can happen. I do apologize for making anyone think I meant all Muslims mistreat women with brutality.
That being said...
Islam does NOT view women as being equal to men in all things and they do not have the same rights men do in everything and that's pretty clear no matter how liberal the interpretation is. The extent to which the doctrine separates them construes mistreatment in my book, as I view the sexes as equal.
That being said...
Christian countries are guilty of the same sort of prejudices and bias against women to varying degrees usually, as you said, dependent upon the poverty and education level. It would be total bullshit for me to call just the Muslims on sexism.
That being said...
I'm gonna try to elucidate how I feel in an overall way by taking something you said and explaining why that bothers me.
Many things in the koran are not meant to be followed the way they are written but because these people don't know any better and are following Islam in an unhealthy way they follow it... I can't actually say wrong but, wrong. people who are educated and a little more spiritually developed wouldn't stone anyone.
Same is true for the Bible. Problem I have is, it does actually say some pretty horrible things in these books. I wonder, why would anyone pick and choose? Why be a Muslim or Christian at all if you don't prescribe to what it says in their holy books? Why not be a different thing all together? How can someone take only the parts of a religion that appeal to them and still be of the same religion of someone who takes entirely different parts completely at odds with each others beliefs? It all seems...dangerous to me. Why we feel that just because something is old and has many subscribers it must have more truth to it baffles me. Why not just be spiritual in your own way and merely be a deist instead of a Muslim or Christian or whatever? If someone wanted me to be in their group and showed me their literature and it spoke of truth and love and human kindness but also that we should stone to death a woman if she commits adultery and they just went, 'Oh, no one pays attention to that part, just ignore it' would I join? No, and neither would anyone else.
Ok, Sorry, I had that rant built up and I wanted to get it out. Honestly I've got no problem with whatever you or anyone wants to believe as long as it A: treats every human being the same regardless of beliefs, race, gender or which gender they like to have sex with; B: Doesn't promote hatred of any kind for any reason; C: STAYS THE FRAK out of government and D: Respects that I have just as much of a right to speak about doubt & skepticism and to question anyone else's belief system as they do to call theirs the only true faith.
I really hope I didn't offend you with any of this. That certainly wasn't my intent. I am a secular humanist and truly honestly believe in going out of my way to try and make us all get along. I also feel I shouldn't have to feel guilty about being an agnostic and society as a whole tries really hard to shut us up more than anyone. So I apologize for you getting the brunt of the argument but I did want to explain as clearly as I could to you where I was coming from.
There's tons of carefully selected picks on my jukebox. I'd recommend checking those out and if you like any go pick up the albums. LOTS of indie rock on there.
Sorry I had to delete your comment because it had old Reel Deal stuff on it and Korey has been quite firm about not wanting any of that on the site (for some reason). As far as your question about getting free comics, I have no idea. I've never approached the comics companies and wouldn't even know where to start doing so. I guess do some google searches of the majors and try to find some emails or phone numbers on their business sites. Regardless, you're going to want to produce and post several animated reviews before you ask them for anything because they aren't going to take you seriously otherwise.
