Theres a robotic 'top half' that the actors ride around on, and a robotic head for close up shots, and the entire thing is touched up with CG. I think it'll be beast-mode. As for Momo... I think the obvious choice was to bail on him, but if Shyamalan thinks he can make it work, I'm all for it. So far he hasn't disappointed.

And about the Earthbender... hmm... I thought Bumi because of Omashu, but you're right about him not being casted. If he is Bumi, and he isn't on the cast list, then that may mean that Jet is in the movie and not yet on the list like Bumi. and I hate Jet. so that would be bad. lol, for now I'm sticking with Bumi as my guess!

I was a little upset at the casting to begin with, but after seeing them in costume (and after Jesse Mccartney was dropped for the wonderful Dev Patel) I have no doubts. The problem then became the storyline, so I spent a while trying to figure out how they would translate book 1. I did a blog post about it a week or so ago, here it is:
