Zemeckis, Denzel Washington Circle 'Flight'

Source: THR

Robert, Robert, Robert... what are we going to do with you, man? It seems like Robert Zemeckis is everywhere lately - first his studio's 'Mars Needs Moms' adaptation bombs at the box office, then his 'Yellow Submarine' reboot get unceremoniously canned, then we hear rumors that the former director of 'Cast Away' and 'Forrest Gump' might be directing a 3D/Live-action family film about garden gnomes? Shameful. But cheer up, Spillios - there's a silver lining. Reports are coming in that Zemeckis is circling a high-profile live-action project... with Paramount... and might be working with Denzel Washington. (cue angelic trumpets)

The film - titled 'Flight' - is a drama about a pilot who saves an entire aircraft full of passengers after the engines malfunction, becoming a hero and an overnight media sensation. However, when the FAA investigation into the accident reveals that the engine "failure" was actually caused by the pilot under the effects of a serious substance abuse problem, they are quick to sweep the evidence under the rug to save the potential embarrassment to the company and to the pilot - who is trying to change the course of his otherwise failed life.

'Real Steel' writer John Gatins wrote the script and was originally attached to direct, but with Dreamworks recently re-hiring him to pen a pre-emptive sequel to the robot fighting film, the director's chair on 'Flight' has been left vacant. As the kind of project that could garner a serious awards spree in the right hands, insiders say that Denzel Washington is in talks to play the lead role but nothing has been confirmed. If nothing else, this could be exactly the kind of project that Zemeckis needs to re-establish himself once again as an A-List director.

Whoa whoa, wait a minute. Zemeckis is working with ACTUAL actors, NOT motion-capture zombies? I'll believe it when I see it.

Be still my beating heart... a Zemekis movie that doesn't involve bad CGI laden zombie children!! GO FOR THE GOLD!

Could be a big box office and critical hit if done correctly.

How would substance abuse DIRECTLY cause an engine to fail? Other than that, it sounds interesting.

This sounds like a Sullenberger themed E! True Hollywood Story... We shall see...
