If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Remember back when Marvel first announced that they were planning on making a movie based on 'The Guardians of the Galaxy?' We laughed and laughed. How could they possibly generate interest in a property that obscure? Fast forward ahead a few months, and the race to see who will lead the 'Guardians' cast is sending the rumor mill into overdrive. Recently it was reported that Zachary Levi (TV's 'Chuck') had entered contention for the role of Star-Lord. This comes a month after Marvel announced that they had put together an entire list list of viable candidates on which Levi did not appear. However, director James Gunn has adamantly refuted rumors on via his Twitter. For NDA reasons, most of his specific debunking tweets have been deleted, but a screenshot caught this one...
Right out of the gate, let me say that I was one those duped by the original story, but it's painfully clear from Gunn's reaction that Levi won't be involved in 'Guardians.' Does that mean that I don't have to give up the ghost that Nathan Fillion will be playing Star-Lord? Yeah, I know, but I'm holding on to that glimmer dammit. I can understand why some of us were taken in by this story. Levi is not a left-field choice. I never regularly watched 'Chuck,' but not because I harbored any dislike for it. In the few episodes I saw, I was always impressed with Levi. Plus, from everything I've heard, 'Guardians' is a property with plenty of humor, which might explain why they chose Gunn ('Super,' 'Slither') to direct in the first place. Therefore, Levi's comedy background offered a reasonable link to this project and this role. Also, he's appearing as Fandral in 'Thor: The Dark World' so he already has a working relationship with the company. The red flag this should have raised however is that Marvel has never hired someone to play two different characters in one shared universe. Chris Evans may have been both Johnny Storm and Captain America, but those two properties reside with entirely different studios. Considering the possible Avengers/Guardians crossover, it would be unwise for Marvel to put themselves in danger of potential overlap.
What do you guys think? Would Levi have made a decent Star-Lord? The search continues, who would be your pick?

Comment by BlackMagic on December 26, 2012 at 9:16am You know, these speculation articles usually list a few actors who would be good for the role. Any chance we could get that as opposed to just holding onto the idea of Nathan Fillion? Pretty sure the man's said he's too busy to play the role anyway. It's like when people kept obsessing over wanting him to play Nathan Drake.
Comment by Luke Hero on December 25, 2012 at 7:44pm Nathan would make a great Star Lord...I used to watch Chuck, but always hated Levi
Comment by Dr.DeadVortex on December 24, 2012 at 6:44pm Levi is a little too scrawny to be Star-Lord,i wouldn't mind a newcomer to play the role;kinda want a new face.
Comment by Garrison Yuen on December 24, 2012 at 3:15pm I too am holding on to the glimmer of hope that Nathan Fillion will be Star Lord. Although I could see Zachary as Star Lord too.
Comment by Hogwarts Dropout on December 24, 2012 at 2:34pm Loved Chuck. Looking forward to seeing Levi in Thor: The Dark World. Had this rumor been true, it would've effectively made the MCU jump the shark.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on December 24, 2012 at 2:27pm Well this gives me hope. I hated Chuck. Talk about the nerdist version of pop culture bingo.
