Yup I'm the only one. Who thought D-9 was "meh" (and why this movie won't get an oscar nod)

District 9 Pictures, Images and Photos

I saw the movie last night with all my friends thinking "Wow this is gonna be awesome" What I got was something I enjoyed just a little bit more than Transformers 2. Now let’s start with what I feel was the biggest problem with the film. The directing. Everything about this film to me was a mess. The whole intro was lame and dumb. It's like "okay we can't explain what's going on so let us show news clippings!!!!!!!!!" After that the movie changes around from POV shooting to just a film. That really takes you out of the film IMO. It's like hey how are we watching this right now without a camera on this guy. Okay they changed it around. I'm fine with that but at the end they make it like the intro again. So I have to say **** you film. I have seen people use this when they can't write something into the script. So they made the movie like this because they didn't know how to write in the whole explanation what happened.

Now before I go along with my review. I was hearing "Let's do this" and question asked if this movie will get an Oscar nod. I nearly laughed my ass off. I love you Korey and Co Host, but the movie isn't going to get a nod because it wasn't that good. The story was a mess, the directing was flawed, and the script was bad, All in all it sounds like I hate this movie but I don't. I thought it was a very fun action movie. That tried really hard to be a thinking film. Now the director is no PTA or Nolan so I wasn't expecting an awesome thinking film (Thank god) so I wasn't disappointed in that part of the film. Now I do agree that the Oscars sometimes snub movies because of actor or directors, or genres but when they don't give this movie a nod it's going to be because it wasn't good enough.

Now before I go one with my review let's talk about what I feel are some of the biggest Oscar snubs because of the talent that was in there or because of the genre of movie.

First things first let’s talk about someone I feel that has gotten snubbed by the Oscars not once. Not twice, but three times.

Jim Carrey Pictures, Images and Photos

Yeah that guy. If you don't believe me watch these three movies. "Man on the moon", "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind" and last and what I feel is the biggest mistake The Oscars have made "The Truman Show"

Now let’s start with the Truman Show

truman show Pictures, Images and Photos

What a perfect movie to win an Oscar I mean it won 3 Golden Globe, and had a nod for best picture, screenplay and director (Drama). Wow this movie will do well Jim Carrey will get his Oscar but wait the Oscar comes on by......

The movie wins no Oscars. Not even a nod for best Actor or picture, but there was a nod for best director and writing? Why no best picture?

I'll tell you why the Oscars hate Jim Carrey. So they snubbed what I feel is one of the best and most original film in the 90's, but you want more proof right? Let's go a year into the future.

Man on the Moon Pictures, Images and Photos

Jim Carrey's wins a golden globe and has a SAG nod before the Oscars.

Won another Golden Globe (So two golden globes in a row. Only few people have done that)
Screen Actors Guild Awards nod

The second and third biggest acting awards gave him a nod wow The Oscars must give him his nod now. Now you would think that, but you would be wrong.

Let's talk my favorite movie of the last decade.
sunshine Pictures, Images and Photos

Now Jim Carrey was the star again. Also Written by Charlie Kaufman. So let’s see the nods this movie got as a whole.

BAFTA Awards
Best Screenplay - Original
Charlie Kaufman

Best Film
Steve Golin
Anthony Bregman

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Jim Carrey

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Kate Winslet

Best Directing
Michel Gondry

Golden Globes

Best Film

Best Actor- Jim Carrey

Best Actress- Kate Winslet

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
Charlie Kaufman

But when the Oscars come around. Only one win and that was for

Best Writing, Original Screenplay
Charlie Kaufman (screenplay/story)
Michel Gondry (story)
Pierre Bismuth (story)

And that guy was already robbed for his past two movies.

No Nod for Jim Carrey No Nod for directing (What I feel was the bigger snub) and no nod for Picture.

But why did none of those movies not get a nod for best picture? One reason the academy hates

Jim Carrey In Living Color Pictures, Images and Photos

Now last year two movies got huge snubs. The directors should have gotten a nod and so should have the Pictures

The Wrestler Pictures, Images and Photos

And (you all know)

the dark knight Pictures, Images and Photos

So when D-9 doesn't get that Nod. It really didn't deserve one, but on that note I think it might just get that nod.

I give D-9 a 5.7/10 (6/10 on IMDB)

Also ten movies I have liked more than D-9 (no order)

1. Observer and Report
2. Moon (much better sci fi film)
3. 500 days of summer
4. Star Trek
5. Taken
6. Sin Nombre
7. Watchmen
8. Drag Me To hell
9. Funny People
10.The Hangover

Oh no, the film started out with "news clippings"! Awful, awful, awful! That's the nail in the coffin right there! Thank god a good movie like The Wrestler didn't start out with clippings, I te-......Yeah, and actual clippings too, as opposed to news CLIPS.
I'm going to assume this is some kind of irrational fear of the news of yours, because you just announce so unconditionally, as if news clips was something as intrinsically pestilent to the film as nipples on the batsuit. Fancy qualifying your statement at any point in your review? The directing is a mess because....Oh, we're moving on to another point? The intro's news clips are "lame and bad". (Man, I can't say that transition is jarring and that comment is a bland enigma, that'll be overdoing it! Not good and meh, that should do the trick!). Didn't mind the Jim Carrey canonification, though. But should District 9 even be in this? Aren't you just commenting on how snubbed Carrey is by drawing an analogy to a film you don't think should get a nod. Well if you thought jumping from seing a guy's life in mockumentary to seing it in film was unorganic, then oh boy is grafting two completely unrelated subjects(and a lists of film you like...) together with such flimsy links 10 times worse!
"I have seen people use this when they can't write something into the script. So they made the movie like this because they didn't know how to write in the whole explanation what happened."

......Akward. I could replace "movie" and "script"by review and recycle that in this comment! You don't get a "f****" you from me, though. Just give me more in relation with the subject at hand! Because I read this review and have nothing to gain apart from knowing some guy didn't like it. I could get that much out of a You Tube comment.
And don't write me off as a fanboy of the film(after all, this was simply a review of your review, it's not even necessary for me to opposed my opinions to yours in this comment, as you hardly exposed yours). I am! But I'm willing to hear a conflicting opinion, and instead you just wrote off one of my favorite parts of the movie and didn't say why. How can I weigh the fact that I thought the news clips were informative, original exposition given through interviews that give the info more gravity and the film more realism against "bad and lame"? Work on clarifying your opinion and staying on focus. A review of this form isn't convincing anyone, changing anyone's opinion, or encouraging reflection or dialogue. What's the point?

Yeah but it felt like a 30 million budget to me. At least.

I don't know. I sort of liked how they used the "Documentary" type footage to set the scene for us, and to provide a means of telling the "set-up" to the main story of his transformation after being infected on the job. I also liked how they continued to "insert" the documentary type footage to give us exposition and answer "audience questions" with quick documentary clips. And the way they ended the movie with the wife? Oh, that was PERFECT with the movie right before the credits rolled.

Well I liked D-9 but not as much as everyone else. The lead character was kinda odd...most of the time I was wishing he would die off. But I would give it an 8/10. Story was strong and they did a lot for what little budget they had ♫ ♪ ♫
