With Ain't It Cool News conveniently having the Captain America costume artwork "leaked" to them, and with Collider.com conveniently having the Thor costume artwork on their site, it's now possible for us to see what a possible Avengers film might look like with the "Big 3": Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man:

Of course, if they have Tony Stark upgrade his armor for The Avengers (which he's likely to do), or if they change the design of Captain America before filming (this is just concept art), it will undoubtedly look different, but here is the first general idea of what they're trying to accomplish with this ground-breaking comic crossover film.

"The Avengers" is set to film in 2012, with Joss Whedon rumored to be directing.

To be honest I can't really imagine The Avengers working as a team in live-action ( well... I kind'a from the climax from Ironman 2, but not really ), now what I can imagine is Tony Starks encounters with Cap and Thor and they seriously need to get a nerdy comedian to do they're dialogue, and they have one... Joss Whedon is capable of doing it.

Boy imagine how funny it could be when you got Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans in a room, both of them have excellent comedic timing.... boy I can't wait for this movie :)

Also on the costumes, If they kept the Iron man suit as it is it would be fine, an upgrade isn't needed, and Cap looks kind'a metallic, which is realistic I guess, and Thor... I don't know... I mean they're being realistic they can't have Thor with his original costume standing next to lets say Iron Man.

Well anyway, I hope they find the balance on how Comedic they make it and how serious, and Joss Whedon is the man to find that balance ( I hope)

@Grant:

I agree with you, even though I think the costume is alright overall, not terrible. And the "rubber" is also known as plate-mail, just as real as chain-mail.

oh wait I just got this quote from IGN.com and they say

"IGN has seen the real thing, and in action no less. And we can tell you to calm your trembling heart, dear reader, for the costume looks much cooler than these pictures would indicate -- not as plastic in motion. Indeed, it looks pretty badass."

cap looks great and hopefully they'll ad the wings for the avengers movie but thor...sigh that costume looks as though Iron man built it and where the hell is his helmet if anything he should wear it in asgard and also his whole costume looks like a plastic mess it needs fixing before avengers

@MuttonChop - Here's the image I mentioned, direct from Marvel's site:

@MuttonChop Cartoons - Thor is done filming all the major parts already, so yeah - that's the costume. And since both of the concept art images are from the same person, yeah. This is the Cap uniform. The reason it looks so clean and photoshopped is because it is - it's the concept art. There's a pic of Hemsworth in the actual suit that you can find online.

Who was complaining about Iron Man's costume? It's lifted pretty much exactly from the comics (they even had Adi Granov come in and consult at one point). I think that's the difference in these movies. Favreau was an uber-fan and really respected the comic - the other directors don't seem to have his dedication.

Well did they say that these are going to be the costumes for the Thor and Captain America movie? I think since Thor is still a ways a way they might fix it because it looks like to me to be photoshop for the most part because a lot of the area is way too clean to be the real costume. Yet again I could be wrong on this issue but hey it was worth a try on Marvels part. Well all I have to say to finish this out is how everybody upon seeing Iron Man's costume people were not so happy about but in the movie is just looked so bad ass. So there is hope I can tell for these two up and comers cause its Cap the all time American war icon so they've got to at least get something right.

I think the boots (and the gauntlets) are an attempt at the wrappings around his wrists and legs. Again, super fail on their part.

His costume should've been easy! Limit their design palette to materials and tools available in the Greek and perhaps Roman period, and make a Thor costume.
