Jim Carrey is back! doing what he used to do best, making funny faces and acting like a goofball. But does Yes Man revive old glory, or should it be treated to a sound NO?
Well, a bit of both actually. But heck ,before anything you’re probably interested in what the film is about so let me quickly explain it to you. Jim Carrey plays a lonely guy with a lonely job, his wife died a couple of years ago, and he never does anything because he always makes up some kind of excuse. Eventually he realizes this is going to get him into trouble and he stumbles into a self-motivational seminar that encourages it’s clients to embrace life and say yes to everything. Of course Jim Carrey, who seemingly can’t act like a normal person, takes the whole concept to the extreme and when it initially seems to be working he gets even more fanatic about it. Needless to say, saying yes to everything can get you into a lot of trouble so comedic situations ensue. It’s nowhere near an original concept and feels way too much like Liarliar. But Carrey still has considerable charm, getting him through most of the bad moments.
The guy has gotten old though! Man, I had never realized that he had gotten like 40 or something! It’s not a big deal, but he simply can’t bring up the same energy as in say Ace Ventura.
The film kind of gets away with this lack of energy by turning a big portion of the film into a romantic comedy type of flick. There’s a love interest and they do all kinds of cuddly things together. In those scenes it’s obvious that Carrey’s matured as an actor and most love scenes are really pretty cute, and in my opinion alot more engaging than the goofy parts. Which sadly doesn’t take away that for a comedy there really aren’t any laughs to be had in this film. Neither me, nor the audience were laughing out loud at any given part in the film. And considering all the effort Carrey was making doing silly faces and all that stuff..that’s not good.
But as a romantic/rom-com film it works pretty well and Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel (what a name :o ) make a really cute couple. And even though the film wasn’t funny, it didn’t annoy me either and the pacing was ok. So if it’s a date movie you’re looking for than you can’t really go wrong with Yes Man, but as a regular movie I think I’ going to give it a low matinee. And that’s being pretty nice because there is literallery nothing in this film that we haven’t seen done before and done better.
Rating: Low Matinee
Conclusion: More of the same Jim Carrey stuff. It’s not rotten, but it’s starting to get old.
