Alright look, I did not become a fan of Michael Jackson until after he died. I am not ashamed to admit that. This is a classic case of long time fans thinking that new fans are posers, in a nutshell. The fact of the matter is, when MJ was alive, all I ever saw of him was negative. My mind was ingrained with this idea that he was some kind of mentally unstable, pedophilic freak. At that point in my life, I didn't have much interest in listening to the music of someone whom I thought was a pedophile. And quite honestly, his appearance frightened me. However, once he died, and I began to see more of who he was and not what he had done, I thought, "Well, maybe I'll give it another shot." Turns out that I love MJ's music.
It's a shame that all of you "loyal" fans decide to chase people away from his music simply because of the time in which they began to listen to it. So, just because we weren't old enough to have been listening to him since he started, you have to put us down for liking his music? I really don't see the point in casting out these new fans. As far as I can see, this can only help to deepen Michael's impact on the world. He's spanning two generations; there was the generation primarily of the 80's that loved him when he was new, and this generation who hadn't thought much about MJ until his death got so hyped up that they decided to see what all the fuss was about.
Now, I am not defending those that listen to MJ's music simply because he is dead and it is the popular thing to do. Those people truly are posers, but I feel that they are few and far between. Most of the new fans are like me: they never had much reason to listen to MJ before, but once he died, the hype made them curious, so they gave him a listen, and genuinely liked his music.
So, to conclude, don't chase us away just because we're new. Instead, embrace us and show us the true depth of Michael's amazing-ness. Spread the wealth of MJ's musical brilliance. Thank you and have a nice day; or don't, whatever may be your preference.
