If it's crap... We'll tell you

20th Century Fox has hired "Gossip Girl" creator Josh Schwartz to write X-Men: First Class.

Schwartz, the creator and exec producer of CW's teen sudser hit as well as Fox's youth-centric "The OC" and NBC's "Chuck," is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide.

Writing assignment has also included the possibility of directing the pic, but so far Schwartz has opted not to take the helm.

Resulting film would likely draw from elements of the Marvel comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics.

Given Hollywood's penchant for reboots with new actors playing familiar roles, pic could also reintroduce characters. Comicbook revolves around the Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, Angel and Professor X.

Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all three "X-Men" pics, as well as next summer's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is producing "First Class" alongside Mr. & Mrs. Smith scribe Simon Kinberg.

Wow, totally broke same thing on my Spill page an hour before this posting, but...fair enough.

Yeah, "next-gen" sensibility. I wonder what happened the last time someone wanted to do that...

Oh yeah. It was called "the Generation X TV movie".

I'm actually hopeful for it. SUre, I'm kind of like wtf about the writer, but then again, who would have thought a video game voice actor would be able to write the first film? AT any rate, Terminator has been surprisingly acceptable with the effects and the action, so I'm not nervous about Fox doing a show like this, at least not as much as I was with the start of Smallville coming off Birds of Prey. Of course, something tells me it could, and most likely will take a few seasons to get into a comfortable enough groove to really make it a good show.

The could be good. Cause X-men does have/need a bit of teenage drama. It should shine light on how these teenage mutants have to deal with being who and what they are while trying to live in a world where people hate them. The mutants carry tons of relationship and self-identity crises. Look at Rogue and how her powers affect her relationships with guys. She can't touch them and can't explain to them why she can't cause they'll fear and hate her. So I agree with the chosen writer but the dialogue better not be some sugar coated bull. There needs to be some good tension and some of these mutants aren't emo crybabies. Some of them are scared and pissed. There needs to be some violence and good effects.

... Fox should be banned from superhero movies.

"Oh no- we completely understand what the fans want- that's why we got THE GOSSIP GIRL creator to remake X-men the RIGHT way. We suspected that people wanted action but no- they really just want angst and teenage bullshit instead."

Ohhhhh joy.

So it's the X-Men, but with extra, modern, teenage angst and drama?

Ugh, my nightmares of X3 are starting to recur again...
