Get ready ride highway to the danger zone all over again, Spillios, the 'Top Gun' sequel has found itself a writer. The followup to the 1986 Tom Cruise vehicle about ace fighter pilots at the nation's premier flight school will be penned by Peter Craig ('The Town'). This proposed sequel has been in the works for about two years now. Tom Cruise himself has talked about wanting to do a sequel to this 80s classic, so it's likely that getting him to reprise the role of hot shot pilot Maverick will not be difficult. Tony Scott, who directed the original, is rumored to be returning to the direct the sequel.

So it looks like Paramount wasn't just buzzing the tower when they said they wanted to do a 'Top Gun' sequel. The hiring of someone with Craig's clout suggests that they not only really want to make the film but, hopefully, are also committed to making a quality movie as opposed to just a desperate cash-grab. 'The Town' is a fantastic, incredibly smart crime thriller and it would be great to see a 'Top Gun' sequel with a little bit of an edge to it. Well, to be fair, I don't know that we need to see a 'Top Gun' sequel at all, but if there is no getting around it, I'd prefer it had a bit of an edge to it. Craig is also set to write 'Bad Boys 3,' so he's sort of in the sequel business of late. Though I'm not sure a writing team comprised of Charlie Kaufman, Christopher Nolan, and Aaron Sorkin could save the 'Bad Boys' franchise. There is of course the concern that Craig has not written anything beyond 'The Town' so his ability to repeat his success is suspect. Plus, it isn't clear how much of that script was his doing and how much was the product of co-writer Ben Affleck. Basically we just hope Craig's ego isn't writing checks his skills can't cash.

So, Spillios, weigh in. Intrigued by a 'Top Gun' sequel? Feel better about it now that Craig is on board?

@Roboto: crap, forgot about Tron: Legacy, that didn't work well either

Look, the time for a sequel passed way long ago. We've already had Basic Instinct 2 and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps to prove to us that a sequel made ten years after the first featuring the lead actor/actress of the original really doesn't work. I know some people like Wall Street 2, I did not and I blame Oliver Stone's writing/cinematography/directing for the cock up.

I'm not sure what a Top Gun 2 would look like, but given that Cruise has barely aged in those 26 years since the movie, I guess it shouldn't be that hard

Is there no need for a sequel, heck no. Will people go see this, yes. Will I go see it, probably. I hope Peter Craig can write a good enough screenplay for it.

Does anyone even want this?

What, is Tom Cruise gonna be flying remote control drones for a living now? No worries about getting grounded when you never leave the ground.

@Happy,watch the original again it's BLAND with some big plot holes, Legacy while it was bland it was less with the plot holes and had enjoyable action, as a sequel it improved on a lot of the faults of the original, the originals just so dipped in nostaglia people don't like to think of it as bland.
