For a long time, it seemed as if the 'Fraggle Rock' movie was forever going to be a worry for another day. The story of a group of cave-dwelling creatures, and their various neighbors, 'Fraggle Rock' was created by Jim Henson and garnered a great deal of popularity on TV in the 80s. The cinematic adaptation has been a project in development for years, but never seemed to move above ground. Then, in 2011, the film found a new home at New Line. Recently, in what appears to be another step forward, scribes Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian were hired to write the script. Byrkit and Manugian both worked on Gore Verbinski's Oscar-winning 'Rango;' Byrkit sharing a story credit with Verbinski as well working as a storyboard artist while Manugian, a former Carton Network exec, did voice work on the film.
I can't say I was a big fan of The Fraggles as a kid. I watched it occasionally before school, but it was never something I latched onto. That being said, I'm open to the idea of bringing any and all Henson properties back to the big screen. I think 'The Muppets' was absolutely fantastic and reminded us all how much we love the magic of Henson's creations. Granted, the script for 'The Muppets' was also pretty outstanding, which is something the 'Fraggle Rock' movie will also need in order to function properly. It's hard to say how much of 'Rango's story Byrkit is responsible for and Manugian did voice work for the film. So I think it's too soon to be automatically excited by their involvement, but there are certainly worse directions they could have gone in the writing department.
What do you guys think? Are you interested in a 'Fraggle Rock' movie? Do you feel they've selected the right writers?

Comment by Boatloads1017 on June 1, 2012 at 11:46pm Working on Rango is a good sign. What I'm wondering is are they sticking with the Henson puppets or going animated (CG or traditional)?
Comment by VinnyLT on June 1, 2012 at 7:23pm If it stays true to itself like the mummets did it will be a good watch.

Duuuude....I hope the whole movie is about Wimbly learning that he wants to be a fire alarm. Cuz it's amazing to witness. He just runs around yelling. "Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!" God I love me some Fraggles.
