It's rare that the MTV Movie Awards gives us anything worthwhile, and for the most part that holds true for this year's broadcast. However, one particular moment during the show has stirred up a great deal of geek buzz regarding J.J. Abrams' upcoming 'Star Trek' sequel. During a skit in which the popularity of archery in film is examined, (sure, why not), Abrams himself appeared to lend his comedic two cents to the overarching joke. On a monitor behind him was an image that looked, to many people, to be a Klingon warrior. It was later confirmed by Hitfix, from their source at the studio, that the image was in fact of a Klingon and it was from 'Star Trek 2.' Still unsure as to exactly how they will figure into the plot, but this does at least seem to be concrete evidence that they will appear in the film.
I hesitated to report on this for two reasons. First, it seemed like a far-fetched conspiracy theory. "Oh look, that vague, blurry image behind Abrams during the MTV Movie Awards proves there will be Klingons in 'Star Trek 2'" sounded precisely like internet bullcrap. Also, and I've now looked at it several times, I don't see a Klingon in this image. To me, it looked more like a Cobra footsoldier than a member of the 'Star Trek' universe's classic villainous race. But the studio confirmation seems like a pretty airtight endorsement of the validity of the image. So now the question becomes, where will the Klingons factor into the story? We already know that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the chief villain in the film and we've seen set photos of him wherein he looks neither like the old school 'Star Trek: TOS' Klingons nor the later, more sinister-looking version. Will the Klingons be the grunts carrying out Cumberbatch's evil designs? Will they be a standalone secondary threat? What do you guys think?
Do you believe the studio source that this is indeed a Klingon? If so, how do you think they'll factor into the plot?

Comment by Happy Birthday Roboto on June 8, 2012 at 6:59am Well so far the teaser looks like someone will awake from cryo so it looks like Khan will be in this after they said no Khan so I take anything from Paramount as misinformation.
Comment by Alien Minator on June 7, 2012 at 10:29am Picture looks nothing like a Klingon in the traditional sense. The only thing that vaguly looks familiar is the top of it's head other than that all the other features look nothing like a Klingon

@jack68 - Nero literally changed almost everything in some way in the new timeline. Not only did he destroy the USS Kelvin, he destroyed quite a few other ships over the course of his rampage, effectively ending everything that ship's crew might have ever done, and anything that would have happened from those people and ships never being around, and so on and so on. Plus, he's in their timeline essentially wrecking sh** for like twenty years (including the Klingon armada, which might have turned them into a more armored war-like species). Not to mention that because of that initial scan of Nero's ship, this timeline's technology is far more advanced than it was the first time around, so other species may have been discovered earlier, galaxies mapped and explored faster, etc.
TLDR version: They can basically do anything they want with the franchise at this point because it is a wholly different and changed Star Trek universe. I just hope they don't screw it up on their second outing.
Comment by KP Spark on June 5, 2012 at 11:11pm Damon Lindelof is co-writing, so we're pretty fucked.
Comment by Jack68 on June 5, 2012 at 7:42pm @ Calvin and they are not my rules, but the rules brought into play with the first movie still being connected to the original timeline
Comment by Jack68 on June 5, 2012 at 7:41pm @ Calvin Yeah I suppose so. It definitely would not mean the Klingons look like predators now though.
@ OdO I see what you mean
Comment by The Weekend Box Office on June 5, 2012 at 7:08pm I kinda figured that Klingons wiuld make it into this one. With how much of a staple into the Star Trek universe that it has made, it would be stupid not to. I do though look forward to seeing what they do with this if it is true.
Comment by Quicksandbuddy on June 5, 2012 at 6:37pm In the deleted scene from the first film where the Klingons are interrogating Nero they're wearing helmets that look like that.
Comment by Calvin on June 5, 2012 at 4:49pm @Jack68
Actually, by your rules, it would have changed the lives of anyone associated with the USS Kelvin's destruction, not just the enterprise.
Comment by Jack68 on June 5, 2012 at 4:29pm I thought Klingons didn't wear masks at this time in the original series or ever............(yeah I know its an alternate universe.....but the only thing that should have been changed by Nero is the backstory to the Enterprise crew members)
