Warner Brothers has been working with producer Akiva Goldsman since the early part of 2012 on developing an 'I Am Legend' sequel. The 2007 film, yet another interpretation of Richard Matheson's phenomenal story, starred Will Smith as, ostensibly, the last man on Earth; spending most days battling those former citizens of the planet who are now mutated monsters. It seemed likely the studio would again enlist Smith's services for the sequel, but that presumption now looks to be unfounded. In a recent interview with the BBC, Smith expressed his feelings about the sequel. He noted that not only is he not involved with it at this time, but he would also "probably not" be in it at all. He indicated a desire to avoid becoming "the sequel guy."
So...you don't want to be the sequel guy? So I guess 'Bad Boys II,' 'Men in Black II,' and 'Men in Black III' are all, what, creative re-imaginings? This aversion to followups bodes ill for rumored projects like 'Hancock 2,' 'Bad Boys 3,' 'I, Robot 2,' and the 'Independence Day' sequel ('Labor Day?'). I will say that I appreciate him being a little more discerning about the projects he takes on, but mostly because almost all of those proposed sequels to his previous films sound like terrible ideas. Yes, even 'Bad Boys 3.' I think 'I Am (Still) Legend' would have been the most ill-advised of the bunch. If we continue along the line of reasoning that he is no longer the last person on Earth, the hook of the first film would be entirely lost. It's just too bad they rejected my spec script for 'Bagger Vance: The Legend Continues.'
What do you guys think? Would you see an 'I Am Legend' sequel without Will Smith? Would you see one with him?

Comment by Sam. on June 14, 2012 at 12:46pm I know a sequel to 'I Am Legend' would probably not work and a prequel would likely be a bad idea, but dammit I just want more. I love the concept..and Samantha.

Just kidding. But it would be assumed they would find a way to bring him back. Maybe it's a prequel. Maybe he survived but lost a limb, but still leaving him cosmetically attractive. Maybe he is cloned. Anything to sell tickets.
But honestly, I'm glad he turned it down. It's a good time to start to be more discerning about what projects he takes. And I would only see the sequel if it had either Michael Fassbender or Idris Elba.
