If it's crap... We'll tell you

KrissKross

Why the star wars prequels may disappoint, but not quite suck

Here's my reasons why the prequels dont suck (theyre not as good as the originals by any stretch of the imagination)

5) the action
yes, it doesn't matter that much if it shouldn't be the main draw of the film in the first place, but still, the action sequences were pretty great. technically, the movies are all wonderful

4) The villains
Now, I know these can't compete with Darth Vader, but in my mind, theyre fucking close. Darth Maul is so awesome and General Grievous....i just love him. so much. Count Dooku, meh, but fuck it, we got Jenga Fett (which made up for Boba Fett's bullshit death)

3)All the actors except Hayden.
I just don't like him, but honestly everyone else seemed to make up for it. Natalie Portman was a bit iffy, but good enough. Everyone else though was just excellent

2) The weaving into the original mythology
Now, as for the midiclorians (sp?), i understand alot of people got angry about that, but i choose to see it as a sortof religion vs. science point of view. But I have to say, I very much enjoyed all of the references, foreshadowing, and the overall transfer from trilogy to trilogy.

1) Episode III
The first 2 aren't terrible, but theyre not very good. They don't have much to tell and tehy each have pointless action sequences that just waste screen time (pod race, coliseum, etc.). but episode III gets down and dirty from start to finish. it concludes all the story lines and sets up the next movies so perfectly. (and we got general greivous! i love him...so much) Another wonderful draw of the movie is the complete lack of a certain annoying CGI fuckface. the problem with the movie? Hayden Christiansen pretty much. he doesnt do well at all. it's not as bad as 'Clones' but still not good.

Bonus reason) it spawned the excellent miniseries, Clone Wars (no not the new 3D animation crap)

As for the many flaws in the trilogy, i see them. They bum me out. They don't make me scream at the heavens and curse Lucas's name. I simply question some of the decisions he made. overall, i have deemed personally that the movies don't suck (while the first two border on being bad, but are mainly just mediocre and pointless) and can even be great at times. and i got General Greivous. I love him...so much

The prequels did suck and there was a good reason for that. I believe I wrote a blog about this a while back, yes here it is: http://my.spill.com/profiles/blogs/947994:BlogPost:531865

I think the action really saved episode one for me. The Darth Maul fight scene at the end was bad ass.
Episode 2 was much better than episode one
Episode 3 saved the prequels all together from sucking.
I don't think their the worst movies I seen. I can at least watch them again.
I could also pick at episode 6 for the Ewoks being the key to stop the Empire

and im not in love with greivous. i just love him like i love Heath Ledger's Joker (only he's not quite as brilliant as what Heath did with that character)

if u wanna go that way, then i would have to say Winowa Ryder in Alien 4. the movie was pretty meh, but she can jump my circuits any time

ok, Kent, i read it, and i have to say that yeah, if you compare the two trilogies the originals win by a huge amount every time. But in this post, I'm not comparing the two.

"The Star Wars prequels suck... They're full of flaws that people excuse them for only because they're the Star Wars prequels."

Here's the thing, I've noticed that the flaws in the films are completely overblown because theyre the star wars prequels. looking at them as a standalone trilogy, to me, it doesnt suck. there are so many more worse movies out there. Most movies can't be considered good when compared to the original star wars. Theyre just that good. to ask lightning to strike so hard twice is just unfair.

"They don't feel like Star Wars at all most of the time."

theyre not supposed to feel like the original trilogy, because the universe is radically different. order is represented throughout the galaxy, and everything is neat and colorful. the universe in the originals is torn to shit. I don't want the prequels to feel like the original star wars, because that goes completely against its purpose.

and two things, I don't know why i said Jenga. i meant to say Jango. my bad. got my boardgames mixed up with my bounty hunters.
about jarjar, his presence is utterly useless but I just tune him out. just like that, he doesn't matter any more. He's not in episode I THAT much, and he's in II for like 5 seconds. All I was saying is that him not being in the third one is a good thing, and i'm glad he's not in it. That doesn't make the others terrible. I just didn't want any more screen time wasted.

"Take a look at Padme's birthing scene. Why did they show that there were twins? Why did they name them both? This completely removes any surprise or emotion in 5"

The originals are meant to be watched before the prequels. I don't know a single person who doesn't know who Luke's father is. Face it, there is no surprise left in the originals.

basically, my point is that they do not suck. they are not great. they all have really bad moments and really good moments that weave into a large web of mediocrity

when expectations are so high, the disappointment can make something average look like shit

What's up with all these prequel posts all of a sudden? I agree with you these are pretty entertaining flicks but are not exactly great and don't hold a candle to the originals. The real question is what is up with mentioning how much you love Grievous all the time? There are much sexier robots to have a crush on like the Fembots or that Terminator chick.

http://my.spill.com/profiles/blogs/kriss-krosss-star-wars-blog this is my rebuttal. I didn't feel like leaving it as a single comment because of it's rather impressive length.

I also have to add that episode III also got a good amount of critical praise (or mercy, whatever you wanna say) with an 80% Tomatometer rating on rotten tomatoes. doesnt prove anything to the individual but im just sayin.

wow, never had a featured post before...nice

itchinader- I love you...and general greivous

Wayne- WHAA? the first two spiderman movies are great, only the third is a mess. and ya Depp is the only really good thing about the pirates movies. the new Star Trek was so great

Nigel Cat- for whatever reason, I don't mind bad dialogue. i don't know why, but it just has never bothered me. in any movie.

Ron Grijs- To me, the point of the prequels were to show the republic with power, to have them thwarted, and fall from power so that all of the underdog examples from the originals could take place. The heroes had to have the upper hand at that point in time so that the defeat could be so devastating

I just thought the entire prequel trilogy was far too complex for it's own good. The overall story wasn't that bad, it just got lost between all the over the top action, bad dialogues and CGI. The original trilogy might be epic but it was also rather small, going on an adventure with these guys in their broken spaceship was really the heart of the story. In the prequels the characters are all over the place due to some bad story decisions. It would have been better if Anakin was a teenager in ep1, if Padme really was a princess from Alderaan (and didn't die) and there was one sith apprentice before (and possibly killed by) Anakin just to give a few examples. I'm 20 andf I watched starwars ep4 as a kid on tv (and the sequels on the 25th anniversary edition) and I liked the action scenes in them much more then in the prequels. I couldn't care who won during the lightsaber fights because the action was so fast that you just knew that every hit wouldn't do much, in the original trilogy I feared for Luke's other hand with each blow. Same goes for the spacecombat, apart from the ships being really ugly it was never exciting. And as I mentioned before, the dialogue was so bad, for me it was a symbol of how the entire cast was just doing with Lucas told them to do instead of having fun with their roles. I also blame the overuse of bluescreen, but that's Lucas fault aswell so I just blame him. He gave me great childhood memories and he also killed them, I haven't watched SW since ep3.

I think a lot of the problems stem from looking at Star Wars with two different eyes. Right now, all I've got in my head is that scene where Leia and Luke are on that ledge in Episode IV, and she yells "Quick! Find the controls that extend the bridge!" If that line was in the prequels, it'd probably be derided, but it passes by unnoticed in the original.

I'm not saying it's a bad line, or that it was even awkwardly delivered by Carrie Fisher, but it's one of a thousand nitpicks one can have with the original films that can also be said of the prequels. It just depends on what eyes you watch them with.
