If it's crap... We'll tell you

Ok, so remakes and reboots are 95 - 98% useless and horrid abominations, but there are a few that stick out. Ok let's take the controversial Platinum Dunes. They are responsible for a lot of anger due to slasher reboots and remakes. Some people complained when they rebooted Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. All of which are considered the slasher equivalents of Citizen Kane in different ways. However if you think about it the originals are really the only ones worth saving. Take the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it was the art film equivalent of it's time. It was very good, and quite beautiful in some ways, I can't deny how it's such an iconic slasher. However look at the sequels it had; they were fucking awful, I didn't realise that it had sequels until the reboot came out. When I saw the reboot I actually preferred some parts to the original, you might say because of that I prefer the remake, and you're right I do prefer the remake, some parts are more gory, and more intense. However I still enjoy watching the original, the remake doesn't bastardize it as much as The Italian Job remake. The Amityville Horror remake I preferred too, it had some scary moments, and was altogether in my opinion a better product. Not to say that the original is invalid, without it we wouldn't have a remake. Then there's the remakes that blur the line between good and bad.

Take Friday the 13th. The remake was a good decent slasher, it had some cool deaths, I preferred the actor who plays Jason in this one, especially when you se the intensity of Jason's eye in one particular scene, I liked the fact that they made Jason a more believable killer, there was a lot of nicer touches that I preferred to the Jason in Friday's 2 - 11. However the story, the acting and most of the kills were pretty standard, the ending was horrid too, the fact that Jason was shown all the time was a slight, but forgivable disappointment, However I still enjoyed the reboot (not remake otherwise it would be Mrs Vorhees as the Killer) more than Friday's 4 through to 11 (FvsJ), especially as I HATED Zombie Jason (probably one of the most dumbest moments in Horror history). So yeah Friday 13th wasn't a bad 1st attempt at a reboot.

So then the reboot of my most adored franchise was announced. I wasn't too impressed at first, but then I thought of it logically, and it made complete sense:

1) I hated Nightmares 2 through 6 and didn't care too much for Freddy vs Jason. The only good ones were the original and Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

and

2) Freddy after the 3rd film just became a walking joke.

Now it's past comic con I have to say I've built up a good argument why the Platinum Dunes reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street is a necessary evil.

The first complaint I hear from my fellow Nightmare fans is Robert Englund isn't Freddy. Well first of all Robert is getting old, and even he admitted he is only good for one take. The second reason is that Wes Craven was the only one to get a good performance out of Englund as Freddy. The rest of the time Englund wouldn't platy Freddy scary, he'd just prance about feeling like a complete idiot about having to ride a skateboard and shout cowabunga!
The next two is that Jackie Earle Haley is an amazing performer and that Robert Englund himself supports Haley in the role. Englund even suggested that Freddy dresses in overalls and wears a baseball cap instead of the sweater and fedora!

Another complaint I hear is that it wont be as good as the original. First of all who cares? if it isn't GOOD I thought fans want the original to be the best, are they scared that the remake will surpass Craven's work? If it is better than we have a better product, and people can enjoy both versions for different reasons. I doubt it will be better, but It sure as hell will surpass 2 - 6, and Freddy vs Jason, dear god NOTHING can be worse than Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Another complaint (one that I had at the beginning too) was the Director. He directed a bunch of music videos (like Smells like Teen Spirit) and some commercials. So a lot of people are scared that an inexperienced film director can't make it a good film. First of all all newbie directors are asked to do something low budget like a horror, and second of all Ridley Scott was shooting fucking commercials before he shot Alien, and look how fucking great that was! So maybe Sumuel Bayer is the next Ridley Scott? Who knows? Which brings be to the comic con footage. Apparently we see a small amount of Freddy's back story which is awesome, and some almost shot by shot smilialaraties with some scenes and shots of Freddy. Apparently Freddy is shot very close to the shadows, and is scary as fuck. So I don't see this being a bad film at all. Looks like Bayer has shot it how we all want to see Freddy, Dark, quiet and full of venom.

Ok so now the early script review. There was one complaint about Nancy being a goth chick, but I'd rather that than her being a total bitch, at least she's going to be a strong character. Another complaint is that Freddy doesn't joke, and he hardly talks. Well that's what i fucking want, I want a Freddy who sticks to the shadows, and when he says something it fucking intimidates the fuck out of you. So fuck anyone who misses the Freddy whose a complete and utter Joke. Yet another complaint about the Freddy character. People have complained that Freddy was a child molester rather than a murderer, but Wes Craven wanted Freddy to be a molester, so it's sticking with the original concept fro Freddy. Fucking A. The last complaint is a bit trivial, but people complain that teh new script has references to Guitar Hero and Prodcasting. Well fucking hell this adaptation is set now, so of course you are going to have modern references, fuck sake!
There is only one valid argument that I see in the script complaints and that is it starts with a teen party... EVERY FUCKING SLASHER HAS A FUCKING TEEN PARTY! Can't ANYONE think of something OTHER than a fucking teen party?!?!? That is so far the only complaint I have with this early script. I don't see much else taht there is to complain about.

With all these counter augments I'd like to support and back the new Elm Street movie. I'd only like to say this through with extreme caution. I'm not saying go blindly into supporting this, I'm saying take into consideration all the evidence and process it without bias. If you see footage or a photo that proves that the elm street remake will be horrid, then process it in. I'm 60% ok with the remake, and can't wait to actually see a trailer, or a scene to make proper judgement, but so far it looks like the next gen elm street will be a decent flick!

Xmas shopping in the big sale opportunities that come along is certainly a great good] idea, but recall that while there are some ways you can truely take advantage of the big sales that come your way, you may also have your xmas shopping deterred...
