I was looking up IMDB yesterday for obscure summer movies, when out of nowhere I kept thinking about whatever happened to Johh Hughes and why hasn't he made any new movies lately. Director/writer of such classic gems like , Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Weird Science (1985) The Breakfast Club (1985) Sixteen Candles (1984) Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) Pretty in Pink (1986) .
But then I thought of something else, but along similar lines. Who in your opinion, is the new John Hughes? I don't mean a hack rip off director who remakes sappy teen movies from the 80s. Someone who actually does the same type of films as John Hughes used to do, stories with depth and humor. It's kinda sad that IMDB lists his most recent writing credits as Bethoven the 5th (about the large dog) , Curly Sue , and most recently, the awful (from what I heard) Drillbit Taylor. Maybe it's his age and the earlier cooler stuff had to do with the different writing/directing style.
I recently saw a movie on tv called Boys and Girls starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and it sorta had that same John Hughes vibe going for it, but not quite.
So the question is: Who is the new John Hughes?
Answer: There is no new John Hughes!
Now that I’m over the initial shock from James Cameron’s Avatar I thought I’d share my views on the movie.
I’ll be upfront with you. I really didn’t know what to expect from this. Sure there were trailers but I’ve learned to mistrust clips slapped…
