Something really pissed me off today. Toy Story 3 has finally been released here and I was very excited to see it. Not only is it supposed to be a great third movie in a series (a rarity), but it is also nostalgic, seeing these great characters on the big screen again. I was already planning on going to see it with some friends when I visited my local theaters website and noticed that they are only playing the dubbed version. I said "fuck" and went to a website of another theater hoping for a miracle. When instead of a miracle I received a slap to the face, I came to the annoying realization that I would not be able to see the original Toy Story 3 until it hits the DVD and Blu Ray shelves. Well, fuck me.
I looked at the websites comments that had quite a few comments about the dubbing. Most of them were negative, but that wasnt what surprised. What surprised me was the fact that some people are actually defending this bullshit, claiming that it is good for kids, ignoring that adults would also like to see it, because in their head: animation = kid stuff and if you are an adult who likes watching animation, you are a manchild and need to grow up. There are cartoons that are aimed at kids, but a lot of them are aimed at all audiences. The only difference between an animated film and a live action film is the presentation. Choosing to animate a movie does not make it only for kids. Animation is an art form and people should start respecting it as one. It is bullshit that the people in charge of these dubs think that they have the right to slice the demographic for which these films were created for, because a lot of people dont want to see a dubbed movie. It disgusts them because it feels unnatural.
Not to mention that by giving kids only dubbed cartoons to watch you are prohibiting them from learning a foreign language, like english. But according to lazy parents, that is a good price to pay for not needing to translate the movie and you know, talking to their children.
