A an interesting development has cropped up regarding 'Star Wars Episode VII.' That sentence could actually start many a news story over the last month. Last week, the Disney/Lucasfilm hired Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to write what we all assumed would be 'Episodes VIII' and 'IX.' Michael Arndt ('Toy Story 3') had already been commissioned to write 'Episode VII' However, it now appears we may have been a little overly presumptuous in that thinking. THR is now reporting that Kasdan and Kinberg will be writing separate films that could factor into the main continuing storyline or that could possibly provide the basis for a spin-off featuring side characters. Given that one of the Disney execs recently said the goal was to release a new 'Star Wars' movie "every two or three years," there is certainly plenty of room outside the new trilogy for Kasdan and Kinberg to potentially work.
What's amazing to me is how the biggest movie deal in recent memory, yielding a thoroughly public developing project like new 'Star Wars' movies, still plays a few things close to the vest. That's not to say the studio is obligated to reveal everything about what's going on with the new 'Star Wars' universe, but I am baffled by this situation because it almost seems like they don't really know what their own plan is. You mean to tell me you hired Lawrence Kasdan, the writer of both 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi,' and you MIGHT not have him work on the new main trilogy? Seriously?! Does this mean they're not telling Kasdan or Kinberg what to write, and they're just resigned to see what happens when the script turns up on their desk? I'm a little concerned about the concept of developing spin-offs of the new trilogy before anyone has put together...the new trilogy. Or perhaps spin-offs will be of original trilogy, and feature those characters. Is a Boba Fett movie too much to hope for? But still, why develop those before 'Episode VIII' and 'Episode IX?' I think they really need to nail down what they're having these guys work on if they indeed haven't already. All things being equal, I guess the best case scenario is that they're just being coy, and that they know what Kasdan and Kinberg are writing and just don't want to share right now.
What do you guys think? Would you rather have these two writing 'Episodes VIII' and 'IX' or a spin-off?

Comment by Joseph John Bolzenius on November 29, 2012 at 8:59pm It all about the writing, that was true for episodes 1-6. When you had Lucas penning stuff we got Jar Jar, younglings, and midi chlorians. As stupid as the Ewoks beating the Empire on Endor, I thought Return of the Jedi was still pretty damn good. So seeing that Kasdan is going to write at least one new Star Wars flick, I feel pretty hopeful so long as the actors are not as wooden.
Fuck Disney, Im going to be a naysayer and say that DISNEY will screw it up. Just an opinion, please dont hate...too much.
Comment by Yourbigpalal83 on November 29, 2012 at 3:21pm Im guessing that there going to do the main storyline, and have various spin offs, a Bobba fett movie, etc...There is no reason what so ever star wars films have to follow a Episode 1-12 format or what ever...you can have side storys, in between stories, legacy and legendary stories, etc...the stars are the limit here.. But i do think they should do 7-9 first, as kind of a spine to hold the whole thing together in some form of order
Comment by Bryan the Bard on November 29, 2012 at 1:51pm I think they should write a spin off but still be highly involved with episode Vlll & lX. If they end up doing a spin off it gives them the chance to introduce new characters that will play an important part in the main story. Weather they're characters already in the massive amount of source material to draw from (EX. Mara Jade etc.) or completely new characters.
Comment by Brendan on November 29, 2012 at 1:15pm Make a Bobba the Fett movie please.
Comment by John Matthew Clay on November 29, 2012 at 9:33am Although...i would like to see a remake of Episode VI...keep it all exactly the same, except change the "Ewoks" to Wookies...i cant FUCKING STAND EWOKS!!
Comment by John Matthew Clay on November 29, 2012 at 9:31am ehhh :\ ...i was actually looking forward to this movies. I am a HUGE Star Wars fan...I just hope they don't screw this up..
Comment by patmander on November 29, 2012 at 8:26am i hope Disney is thinking. "they are the writers lets let them figure it out" instead of pulling a "wild wild west" and ruining any potential for the film with executive bullshit.
personally i don't want o see any of the original plot elements or characters (except for maybe han) i want a completely new story set in the star wars universe.
Comment by Malcolm McGuire on November 29, 2012 at 2:07am They should do a movie about Lando calrissian, anyone?
