Looks like Wes Craven's 'Scream 4' needs to make a couple more millions at the box office when it opens - the Weinstein Co. just paid to settle a lawsuit filed by longtime producer Cathy Konrad. Konrad claimed that she was instrumental in the development of the 'Scream' franchise, and was entitled to the first opportunity to produce any sequels on the same terms as 'Scream 3', for which she received over $650,000 (for both producing and bonuses for hitting certain box office goals).
Konrad also alleged that not only was the franchise "restart" developed behind her back, but that she was unceremoniously removed from the franchise to lower costs and to hire Craven's wife instead (an allegation that the Weinsteins' attorney denied at the time). Exact terms of the settlement have not been reported, but it's rumored to be a cash payment as well as a small take of the back end of the film.
As is often the case in legal disputes, settling the case out of court doesn't necessarily indicate guilt - the Weinstein's could have simply decided to pay Konrad a small token rather than drag out the proceedings and open their film with a potentially damaging lawsuit hanging over their heads, Or, they could be completely in the wrong on this one and the settlement is essentially "hush money" to prevent bad press.
'Scream 4', starring a new cast of nubile knife-fodder as well as the return of Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette opens in theaters on April 15th.

Comment by Doctor Orpheus on April 7, 2011 at 9:25am Why do they keep on making sequels to this movie franchise? Does it really have the draw power to bring in any real box office returns? I mean, the concept was alright for one movie but stretching it out over what is about to be four is ridiculous. Why won't Hollywood let any of their franchises die a meaningful death? Why do they insist on dragging the bloated corpses of their once proud films through the dirt even when they are approaching or have already passed the point where they make decent money?
I know the answer is "they make bank", but it's still frustrating to see things like this in production or out in theaters because all it makes me think is about the fact that the studios would rather make a quick buck than put the effort into creating something original that could make just as much if not more than a resurfaced turd of a film like this. It's almost the exact same complaint that I have with the way the government in this country works: sacrifice originality and the sanity of the people to make small short-term gains.
All I can say is Fuck This Movie and all like it.

Comment by Señor Chaken on April 6, 2011 at 1:19pm I not excited for this movie at all, the trailers look crappy. This series was good for it's time but they've it worn out by now.
@WAM BAM: advanced screenings aren't that exclusive, just about anyone can get in.
