Weekenders: A Look Back At The Week In Movies And More. By Guy... (86)

Spiderman gone 4 good =( Transformer to 3peat this May (Ugh shit) Robin Hood and his merry 3D film? Sherlock’s 2nd case: Nolan’s biggest Inception: Trailers & off topic

Live from the Glasgow Dresden, a couple of blocks from Celtic Park and the Pyramid’s shopping centre of the Parkhead Forge.

IT IS…..

THE WEEKENDERS.

Hello. I’m Guy, the founder of W-E World. =D. Just trying a new style of intro. Too pretentious? Great I’ll go with it then. Lol. And how are you this cold, cold unforgiving month known as January? The kick you in the knackers month and runs away laughing month? Well I hope? Keeping in the pink as we say here. I’m doing well. Still smarting and licking my wounds after last weeks tech faults that prevented the W-E Podcast from getting done. I just want to say thanks for all of the regular listeners for being cool it should be cool for this weekend’s

Elsewhere I’ve just been taking time away from Spill for “Guy” time. And no that doesn’t consist of me burping watching football and porn. Least not until after 2pm. I have my dignity after all.

Still based in the Glasgow Dresden but I will be going back to L of A next week and THE Dresden as FINALLY the weather is getting better now. Not that there’s anything wrong with the Glasgow Dresden of course. Its home and if the day should ever come when I play host to fellow Spillos I do want to make this place look presentable. Um…. It’s really extravagant?? TA DA? That should do for this week’s hometown “plug” lol.

Ok, so let’s start as we mean to go on by me suggesting,

LETSSSSSSS CRRRRRRAAACCCCCCKKKK ONNNNNNNNE OFFFFFFFFF. =D

Always a pleasure. No really it is. Ok, suppose we better get started. =)

And of course there’s only one story to kick off with this week that being the cancellation and reboot of Spiderman.

Now I don’t do this often, yeah? But I got this one wrong when in last week’s blog I pretty much stated that Sony would want to do Spiderman 4 no doubt about it. And that Sam Raimi would either walk or the get the sack or walk with the film still going on. Well that’s not the case. The fourth film is cancelled, Sam and the cast are gone too.=( Here’s the official statement from Sony Entertainment Co- chairman, Amy Pascal..

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,
“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

“Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. “We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen.”

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.
This is your classic “Parted way on amicable terms” speech. Oh look how cheery it is and all hopeful for the future, hee , hee. When in actual fact what probably went on is that Sam and Sony were at constant logger heads over the direction of Spiderman franchise and rather than work it out in a proper and legitimate business sense were everyone would win in the end. Sony got pissy and just hit the nuke button on Spiderman 4. But as then found out there was more and in a possible conspiracy that Jerry Fletcher couldn’t even think up on his best day this statement then came out with news that the franchise is to be rebooted...

"Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

So…. Spiderman as done in 2002 then? The goal also seems to be to aim this reboot at a younger movie goer some say the Twilight crowd and some say the Transformers crowd. I’ve done a lot of jokes this week in the forums and W-E group about Toby Maguire handing the mask over to Robert Patterson “Dawson style” In reality I think this reboot would be more like X-men Origins were well paced storytelling takes a back seat in favour to the action side of it. I think it will have the “teen feel” sure with Peter going all moon faced over Mary Jane and then we hear a song sung by a man who describes his love for this unknown woman as endless as the seas and hourglass of time and wind itself. So just stick on some 2 Live Crew then? And when Pete gets his powers he goes on Twitter and like a true fucking “Twit” goes , “OMG I GOT THZ POWEZ THAT MAKZ ME SHOOT WB’S LOLZ =D” Or not… I’m really hoping the reboot doesn’t go with such heavy teenage symbolism and bathos that today’s younger generation of teen films seemed to constantly littered with. It’s bad enough that the intelligence the films once carried will probably be toned down.

It’s just laughable to me that H-wood has now become the industry of the quick fix and that’s what this. Spiderman 4 wasn’t getting done to the pace Sony wanted it to. Sam was bucking studio ideas in both who the final script writer should be and who the villain is. I’d be willing to bet that there is are many more disagreements that we will never know about went on too.

Sony were in a very strong poition by the end of Spiderman 2 as it was defiantly not only best of the three but I’d go as far to say one of the top comic book film of the last decade. So they should have capitalized on it for part three and well without pointing it all out again. We know what went on with SM 3 and it affected the flow of the film and would also see it get panned upon release. So you would think Sony would have learnt their lesson and been a bit wiser and then do as they said they were going to do. That being give Sam more breathing space and creative freedom to give us the best film he can. But I do need to point out as I did last week Raimi wanting to put the Valture in as the villain has never vibe’d with me for the simple fact I can’t get past the harness thing. As I said on the podcast last night, I can buy the previous villains as having powers cause they got them through accidents and shit. But Adrian Toomes’s rise to power just doesn’t add up with me. Unless of course Sam was going to change the origin of it. Whatever the case it was clear as far back as SM 3 they Sony weren’t up for Adrian but a compromise could have been met for Christ sakes. Well that might be a moot point now. It’s clear the problems were multiple and couldn’t be fixed in time for the May 2011 release.

Now of course candidates are being thrown left, right and centre over who could direct the reboot. Names such as James Cameron, David Fincher and Wes Anderson have been thrown around like cream pies at a clown school fair day. I think we can tick James off right there don’t you? Lol. The man is too busy changing modern cinema as we know it and getting the “Opera seal of approval” to take Peter back to school. Can’t see Fincher doing it as it’s not his bag. Wes, meh? Nah. None of these directors will do it for the simple fact they are too mature for the nature of this reboot.

One younger name that’s been mentioned is young director Marc Webb seen here looking trough the lens of life and wondering if art imitates life. He directed 500 Days of Summer. The concrete thing know about the reboot is that James will write the script. He actually wrote the initial script for SM 4 but Raimi didn’t like it so it was thrown out and new writers hired. Seemingly though Sony have liked James enough to bring him back.

To close on this I will say that it is a bad deal for Sam, Toby, Kristin and the rest of the constant cast as I think Sony really did wrong here by this action. I can understand wanting the gap between each film to be four years at a minimum the franchise is a big money earner for Sony. But why fix what ain’t broke? Sam Raimi for me was doing a bang job. He cared for the series and if given the trust he deserved he could have given us a really good Spidey 4 and one that would cash back at the box office. But no, Sam was a victim of impatient Hollywood which is a syndrome society as a whole suffers from today. I call it the “Quickening ” It expands all walk of life’s really. Wanting the result we need and wanting it NOW!!! In Hollywood it’s about what makes the fastest buck and right now that’s reboots and remakes. Unless the original material could honest to god benefit from such a thing, this form of creativity is the laziest form there is. Fuck sitting down and thinking nay trying to come up with something original or from your head. Just have a gander through yer video collection, skip the porn collection mind and find that film and that classic U want to reboot. There ya go that was easy man. Congrats. Your shallow pay check and scantly clad bitches will be waiting for you at the end of the line…… um…. Yeah… that last part mind….. *shakes head* Man… Umm.. Yeah…. I guess it really is that easy to get seduced by The Quickening in Hollywood. What does it say for me that I in my head didn’t even see the shallow cash? Just the last part? lol.
It will be interesting to see how this will pan out. And by the time this reboot comes out that will be interesting. Let us not forget that the reboot will be out ten after the first “grown up” Spiderman. I’m just sorry that we won’t get to see Spidey through Sam’s eyes anymore.

=(

DO IT. JUMP!!!!!!!!

Ok, believe it or not there was more news and the next one acts a nice link between shallow pay checks and scantly clad babes. He’s the king of it in fact. He’s Michael Bay.

It was announced that pre production for Transformers 3 will start in May. But Bay himself said some interesting thing. Well one interesting thing that was sandwiched between a plethora of sound effects he kept making.

"There will be a nice crescendo ending. It gets much more into the robot character. The last time you kind of met a few of the robots; this time you're gonna get a much cooler landscape."

There’s also word the number of Robots will be pulled back too. So is Bay actually changing his ways? Will we hear less “BOOM” and get to know the story of these robots a little better? Will we get the scene we have all been dying for were Optimums Prime explains the reason he fights for his kind is because he really feels he has a heart all the while his soft dialogue plays in harmony to the strains of Nara and the song Posthumans? And will we get that heartbreaking scene where Megatron collapses in the pouring rain, crying and admitting the reason he’s such a bad robot was because his creator was mean to him when he was young. He would get drunk and then through this alerted state of mind. Through a hazy sight of alchol would fit Megatron up with toy dildos both to his nose and ass? The rain would be falling hard making his paint run which would be a symbol for his humanity slowly getting stripped as he got older?

"I need a hug"

Probably not eh? But as long as it’s some what of a changed effort man. I mean U canae rely on the same tricks over and over again in terms of an on going franchise something Bay hasn’t tackled yet. He has never made a trilogy so he better damn well have something different up his sleeve for the third instalment or I’m pushing that director’s who commit crimes on cinema bill through. Then this….

Will become a reality. As I said the film will start pre production in May to be released the summer of 2011.

Last night a certain doctor asked me a question. Don’t worry he was holding anything of mine as he asked it. I was asked if I think every film will now want to employ 3D to their movies, I answered yes and gave a few examples one of them sadly being the Robocop remake which last time I checked was an equally sad fact that will be in 3D as well. But I forgot about the new Robin Hood film. Apparently Ridley Scott and Universal would be just delightfully overjoyed if their film could be in 3D and it will.

“Sir Ridley Scott has asked for a further $8m from his backer, Universal Films, to add an extra dimension to his untitled Robin Hood venture starring Russell Crowe in the lead role and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian. Two versions of the film will be released in May.”

This of course means the film will need to be converted which if not done right will look silly. Naturally with the runaway success JC is having (not to mention Oprah's seal) more studios want in on this which could see an alarming amount of 2D films converted to 3D over the next few years. But I mean come on a film like Robin doesn’t really need it, does it? And it also once again means the story would take a back seat. I spoke to one Bobby Jaffe the head of a 3D converting company. This was his take on it all….

“We can turn an older film into 3-D in around 16 weeks.” That means to make their May release date someone needs to get cracka’lackin’!"

Really wish he hadn’t said that last part by the way. If I was there in person I may have hit him. Lol. It really is hip to be square isn’t it?

So, there you have it. More Quickening. I really don’t think Robin Hood needs a 3D conversation what so ever. It’s not really going to benefit from it and if anything will only take away from it story wise I think.

On a side note if I may I can now confirm that Ironman 2 will go to IMAX now.

Like a proud parent of some demented kind Paramount Pictures released this statement during the week.
"Paramount Pictures today announced that the highly-anticipated action-adventure Iron Man 2, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey, Jr., will be released to digital IMAX® theaters simultaneously with the film’s worldwide release on May 7, 2010. The film’s limited IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with IMAX DMR® technology.

“The success of the first Iron Man movie catapulted the franchise from the comic books to theatre screens, and we’re excited that the IMAX format will offer fans an even more immersive way to experience the sequel,” said Tim Connors, Chief Operating Officer, Marvel Studios.

“Iron Man 2 is a fantastic addition to our growing film slate for 2010, which is filling out faster than any previous year,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “The rollout of our digital projection system has enabled us to add more films to the slate, and we’re very excited to partner with Marvel and Paramount on this next installment of the incredible Iron Man franchise.”

“We’re thrilled to once again be working with Paramount and our long time friends at Marvel Entertainment as we help to bring their characters to life in IMAX,” The combination of Marvel’s iconic Iron Man story, Jon Favreau’s brilliant vision and Paramount Pictures’ talented team coupled with IMAX will make for a wild cinematic experience.”

For a superhero film especially one as colourful as Ironman this conversion does make a little more sense like when it was done for Dark Knight, but going back to the reasoning U do have to wonder if it was to do with Avatar or was it always a possibility. I guess the only issue this could raise is the ticket prices as Dr. D himself pointed out. But to that I say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As in if it’s a choice between two films. It’s your choice of which version U want to see. =)

In news that will surprise no one Sherlock Holmes will be getting a sequel and it will be begin shooting in June. This seems to be the reason Robert Downy Jr. is now off of the film Cowboys and Aliens as it would conflict with SH 2.

Waston to Holmes: "Wanna have more Bromance?" Holmes: "Certainly."

The first film got mixed reviews but for the most part they were good so I’m glad to see that Holmes will get a second case to work on which odds are will centre around Holmes arch enemy Moriarty and as the rumour there goes Brad Pitt seems to be tipped for that. I’m kind of hoping that’s not the case though.
Brad is a great actor don’t get me wrong and he and Guy Ritchie worked well together on Snatch in which Pitt did excatlly what his character was meant to do and that is confuse all of you. That accent wasn’t messed up or lazy. It was designed like that because Mickey was by default of social status and his upbringing he was a grifter. So it had to be like that. Anyway getting back on track as much praise as Pitt should get for his role there he has no business playing Professor Moriarty. Hate to go there dear reader. But the Prof needs to be played by a Brit. I’m thinking Ian Holm if U want to go old. Ian Mc Shane if you want to go young.

Think both of those guys fit Guy’s Sherlock world to a tee the way Mark Strong did in the first. And both men are so good at very good playing villains. American readers know Ian very well when he plays the fuckin badass motherfucker bad guy in Deadwood. And Ian can bring it and then some when it comes to the darkside. Of course, that’s just my choice of course and I want to go villain Brit pack style. =)

Christopher Nolan seen in there doing what Marc Webb did only so much better is a man on a mission. He wants to make his upcoming film Inception bigger than the Dark Knight. He said a quote that went like this….

“This is the biggest challenge I’ve taken on to this point… We’re trying to tell a story on a massive scale, a true blockbuster scale – the biggest I’ve ever been involved with. We tried to make a very large-scale film with ‘The Dark Knight’ and with this one we wanted to push that even further.”

Hmmm. He has upped the ante. The film is said to have budget at around $2.00 million so Nolan most certainly has the budget to make it happen. Nolan also made this equally interesting comment comparing the film to a certain Spy franchise.

Leo does his version of that Fatboy Slim video.

I have called this the Smart Man’s Matrix and I stand by that. I think this film is being overlooked to the point it’s a crime. I can see this being at the top of a lot of people’s end of year lists and through all the bitching I have done about lack of originality this entire blog, Christopher Nolan is so the opposite of all crap. He’s like the anti Bay and for that maybe there still hope for this decade.

Ok, let us close up with a look at the trailers. Only got two trailers this week this week. One is Tekken. UGH. The other is three of the most random clips U will ever see from a film.

www.cinemablend.comnewFirst-Tekken-Movie-Trailer-16579.html">

Tekken looks silly. Something about how the way the characters are dressed is like that of a shit tribute talent show, were none of the half way decent contestents could be bothered to turn up. The Violent Kind looks as random as hell. I love it already. =)

Well that’s going to do it I think. Another blog done. As always thanks to the group for their support and my darling Co-Host BDiddy xxx. And of course you the reader…. See? You didn’t think I’d mention did you? Lol

Until next week…

This comment is mad late, but great job man!
Im sad about spidy 4,I would have been inestresting to see if they could make a comeback(the only other times that I saw that happen was with "Rocky Balboa" and "Rambo").But the reboot could be good,as long as they don't make him into one of those whiny teenagers."Oh woe is me,I have spider powers."
But at least MJ won't be kidnaped for the 4th time(then again, they might still do it.Why break the trend now?).
