Viggo Mortensen May Set Sail On 'The Last Voyage Of The Demeter'

Of the umpteen billion Dracula projects in the works, one that really grabbed our attention a few weeks ago was 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter.' The Millennium Films project, that had previously done a little studio jumping, follows the crew of the doomed ship that carried Count Dracula's coffin from Europe to America. Specifically, it grabbed our attention because the film will be directed by Neil Marshall ('The Descent'). Today an interesting casting rumor has surfaced. It seems Viggo Mortensen ('The Road,' 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy) has been offered the role of Henry Clemens, one of the film's leads. Furthermore, it looks as if Sir Ben Kingsley is still attached to play the captain of The Demeter, as he was when the project was with another studio. No word yet as to whether Noomi Rapace is still on board.

I'm still not sure how to feel about this flick. As a horror fan, obviously I'm a proponent of Count Dracula, and I'm a big fan of Neil Marshall, but the scope of this particular film feels incredibly small. It's a few months in Drac's overall story and most of the action will take place on one ship? Doesn't seem to afford much opportunity for set pieces or room to explore. That being said, Viggo Mortensen is an actor who fascinates me and I'm happy to see he's being pursued for the film. I'm sorry to say I don't remember the specifics about the Demeter's voyage enough to remember how Henry Clemens fits in. I'm also surprised to see that Kingsley is still being listed as attached even though it has been years since the last time the film was a go. My guess is that tenuous attachment will be severed before too long, but I could be wrong.

What do you guys think? Are you more/less interested in this film now that Mortensen is aboard? Do you think they'll still land Kingsley?

Like the concept. Movie based on the boat that carried the count through the rough seas of the Atlantic, Yeah, Why Not?

Damn, and here I thought Viggo would be playing Dracula.

I think a better idea was to do a movie on Renfield and see how he came to be in the asylum. Hopefully this will wash the taste of Twilight out of my mouth.

I think this is a great idea for a film, so long as they keep the focus on the crew, rather than Dracula. If I remember correctly, none of them ever meet or talk with the Count, and they just see spectral visions beckoning to them before they disappear. Could be really cool if they focus on the cramped and claustrophobic elements of living on a ship, though!

Awesome.

This is actually shaping up to be fascinating. Personally, I want a real surprise for Dracula - someone unexpected who nails it, like ol' Heath and the Joker. As long as it's nobody absolutely atrocious, I'm going to be nothing but optimistic about Dracula's casting, and hope for the best. We need a good on-screen modern Dracula.

This sounds really interesting to me, especially now that Viggo Mortensen may be playing a lead role. While the small setting does limit things, it could result in them doing new and original things with the concept.

My choices for Drac (random as some may be): Garry Oldman, Peter Weller, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Christopher Lee, Michael Sheen, Stephen Moyer, Mark Sheppard, Mark Peligrino to name a few
