If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s graphic novel 'Kick-Ass' turned out to be a hilarious and thoroughly entertaining R-rated superhero story. The cliffhanger at the end of the film, coupled with subsequent movie news blurbs, seemed to indicate that we'd be getting a sequel. But would Vaughn be returning to direct part two? Up until recently, it looked like he was trying to balance 'Kick-Ass 2' with the followup to his 'X-Men: First Class' so that he could do both, but that appears to no longer be the case. 'Kick-Ass' was a Lionsgate production, but apparently became a sort of free agent after that with Vaughn controlling. Vaughn is now looking to hand over the reigns to director Jeff Wadlow ('Cry_Wolf') who also penned the script for the sequel. Universal is in talks to produce the film, which they intend to start shooting in August. Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnson, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all in discussion to reprise their roles. No official deals have been made as of this posting.
As much as I loved 'Kick-Ass,' I'm not sure how excited I am for a sequel. For one thing, I thought the first film was a nicely compact story and don't really feel there's more to mine from it cinematically. Also, without spoiling anything, my favorite character from the first film is assuredly not going to be appearing in the sequel, so again, I'm not clamoring for a second installment. And when you add to all of that the fact that Matthew Vaughn isn't able to direct due to his 'X-Men: First Class' sequel commitments, my interest level diminishes even more. So who do they get to replace him? The guy who directed the epitome of terrible PG-13 horror films. Sources close to the situation seem confident that a deal will be closed imminently, so there is the very real possibility Universal could springboard this into a franchise with further sequels to follow. What do you guys think?
Are you still interested in 'Kick-Ass 2?' Is Wadlow a fair trade for Vaughn? Could you see this becoming a franchise?

Comment by Julien Hemmendinger on May 14, 2012 at 10:08am Well, we got the one R-rated Kick Ass AND IT IS AMAZING. Maybe this will be cool, hopefully. I liked the Kick Ass 2 series.
Comment by john razzell on May 13, 2012 at 7:48am not rated R.... well shit,
look i know everyone and there mums are gonna try and be the next avengers level success super hero movie but you can't do that by copying the formula. it's a shame PG 13 is the most successful rating bracket because it makes these hollywood execs try and push mature property's into PG 13 format.
...The director could be a help or hindrance. He wrote a script that seems to have passed muster which could also help minimize the veiled geek hate that Millar always heaps on his properties. It can't been much worse than the first as long as they maintain the general concepts; Hit-Girl kicks ass and Kick Ass gets his ass Kicked. Toss in a few comedic villains and stunts and you have a workable sequel... Though I wonder is it just me or has Chloe Moretz started to make a habit of playing age-inappropriate character types... although I guess by the time this movie hits theaters at the rate she seems to be growing she could be a full grown woman and it wont seem so odd.
Comment by chilea adrian robinson on May 10, 2012 at 3:48pm That director is a horrible choice
NO!!!!
Comment by Dr. Detfink on May 9, 2012 at 11:04pm The comic book was a running gag on ripping apart and de-humanizing fan boys who spend more time criticizing creators than actually getting laid (which is why in the book, Mark never gets the girl...gets his ass kicked for telling the truth and his dad who separated from his mom, is doinking the fat woman he saved from a burning house...
In other words Millar was saying it's best to have a craptastic existence and stay alive than try to be a super hero. I kind of like that Millar was brutally honest with what he thought of his fan base.
The movie is fun...nothing more.
The sequel to Kick Ass was unreadable. End of story.
Comment by John Lemus on May 9, 2012 at 9:54pm I thought the movie was incredibly well made. In many parts it was as good as the graphic novel and in other parts far better. I like the ending to the movie over how the comic ended. I feel they left it open to the possibility of big daddy returning. I mean hit girl was able to put the fire out. The actor playing Kick Ass did a great job and has actually gotten in excellent shape so it would be interesting to see him doing more action scenes.
Comment by Shane Brio on May 9, 2012 at 8:47pm No dice.
How I felt to read Vaughn probably won't direct...
Comment by Liquid on May 9, 2012 at 5:35pm When you make a good movie it shouldn't take two years to think about making another. The people behind the Avengers figured this no brainer out pretty quickly and although Kick-Ass isn't really the money draw that the Avengers is, it's still a solid property worth bringing in a good crowd. But 4 years after the fact when Hit Girl is half grown, Matthew Vaughn has moved on and a lot of the movie hype has died down, there's really little reason for me to feel too enthusiastic about the whole thing.
