While werewolves and vampires have had quite a few studio incarnations over the last several years, one monster that's been largely gathering dust is the mummy. We had of course that Brendan Fraser-starring trilogy from 1999-2008, but that's been about it. Now, the original haven of cinematic monsters, Universal, is planning a reboot for the character that promises to return the creature to its horror roots. The studio has hired Jon Spaihts ('The Darkest Hour,' 'Prometheus') to pen the script. Here's what he had to say on the matter...

"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before"

I am all in favor of relaunching 'The Mummy' as a horror movie. As a fan of both classic Universal monster movies and Hammer Films, I've been lamenting the fact that we haven't seen a scary Mummy movie in ages. The closest we came was Joe Lansdale's/Don Coscarelli's 'Bubba Ho-Tep,' but even that was more of a comedy with horror elements. I'm not 100% sure of Spaihts as the chosen scribe to reboot an entire franchise. Although he has several films percolating, the only two in the can that he has written are 'The Darkest Hour,' which was confoundedly bad, and 'Prometheus,' which we've still yet to see. I'm not doubting that 'Prometheus' will be of considerable quality, but as of this moment, Spaihts is still a big question mark. Of course, many elements need to fall into place here; namely director and general plot. So perhaps I should put a pin in my consternation toward Spaihts.

What do you guys think? Could a mummy reboot work? Would you be interested in seeing it in theaters? Who wants to bet Brendan Fraser has already called the studio at least two dozen times?

Sorry Salisbury, but I think the general thoughts are NO! While the sequels got progressively crap, the 1999 Mummy film is still well liked and remembered. I really don't think THIS ONE needs to be done.

Now if we're talking the Creature From the Black Lagoon, I shall join you on that crusade....

Some one should reboot Hollywood. This time around, add some brains, new ideas and some talent.

NO! Spillos, this is a reboot of the monsters, not the franchise mummies. Only down side, it's being written from the guy who wrote the drakes hour, and Prmoetheus. hopefully he won't make Prometheus suck.

Great... More reboots...

@Bang It Out      The Mummy with Brendan Fraser was 1999, not 1992.
