While werewolves and vampires have had quite a few studio incarnations over the last several years, one monster that's been largely gathering dust is the mummy. We had of course that Brendan Fraser-starring trilogy from 1999-2008, but that's been about it. Now, the original haven of cinematic monsters, Universal, is planning a reboot for the character that promises to return the creature to its horror roots. The studio has hired Jon Spaihts ('The Darkest Hour,' 'Prometheus') to pen the script. Here's what he had to say on the matter...
"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before"
I am all in favor of relaunching 'The Mummy' as a horror movie. As a fan of both classic Universal monster movies and Hammer Films, I've been lamenting the fact that we haven't seen a scary Mummy movie in ages. The closest we came was Joe Lansdale's/Don Coscarelli's 'Bubba Ho-Tep,' but even that was more of a comedy with horror elements. I'm not 100% sure of Spaihts as the chosen scribe to reboot an entire franchise. Although he has several films percolating, the only two in the can that he has written are 'The Darkest Hour,' which was confoundedly bad, and 'Prometheus,' which we've still yet to see. I'm not doubting that 'Prometheus' will be of considerable quality, but as of this moment, Spaihts is still a big question mark. Of course, many elements need to fall into place here; namely director and general plot. So perhaps I should put a pin in my consternation toward Spaihts.
What do you guys think? Could a mummy reboot work? Would you be interested in seeing it in theaters? Who wants to bet Brendan Fraser has already called the studio at least two dozen times?

*Sigh*
Because ANOTHER reboot is just what we needed, right guys?
Comment by mjtfreeze on April 5, 2012 at 5:39pm I really enjoyed the The Mummy, and I liked The Mummy Returns. Dragon Emperor was just awful. Don't think there needs to be a reboot of the franchise.
AGAIN?!
Comment by K-Bomb on April 5, 2012 at 3:56pm I remember seeing the 1999 "Mummy" in the theater and thinking, "What the hell was that? I'd ask for my money back, but I just sat through the whole cheap thing, waiting for it to get better; that's not fair to the theater."
So if this one is bad, 30 minutes tops and I'm out, demanding my refund. I try to learn lessons from the past.

Comment by Face McShooty on April 5, 2012 at 3:11pm Why everything has to be on an epic scale, something tight and interesting would be much more fitting than a mummy shooting lasercannons and destroying skycrapers.
Comment by Bang It Out on April 5, 2012 at 2:50pm I can't tell you guys how much I loved Fraser's 1992 Mummy. I can remember going to go see it as a kid and having my mind completely blown. xD I even liked the second movie, but that was about it as far as The Mummy goes. I'd so be stoked to see a remake!
Comment by TheMantaBluRay on April 5, 2012 at 2:20pm The first Mummy I thought was fun and better than other action-B-movie serials (except of course the 1st three Indiana Jones flicks). The Mummy Returns is a guilty pleasure as it A TON of downright goofy moments. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was so boring that it even made me appreciate Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I think the best thing for the Mummy franchise is to go back to into a Horror-movie series like the Boris Karloff original.

Comment by crazymartin on April 5, 2012 at 1:22pm I really love that original 1999 version. I thought it was probably the best copy cat to Indiana Jones but with enough cool, quirky characters and a style and tone to stand on it's own. A great action/adventure film. I wouldn't mind a reboot if it's trying something new and different as the 1999 version did, I just hope it doesn't try to mimic any other versions out there already cause then it would automatically be unnecessary.
