Now that the summer has come to a close, all the major studios are looking back and examining what worked and what did not. The things that worked are to be given the only honor studio execs tend to understand: sequels. At a recent conference in L.A. Universal CEO Steve Burke stated the necessity of securing more stable franchises. He went on to cite two of Universal's summer hits that will assuredly be getting sequels. The first was 'The Bourne Legacy' starring Jeremy Renner. The franchise will apparently survive without its titular character. Also mentioned was Seth MacFarlane's 'Ted,' the live action/CG animation buddy comedy about a guy and his talking teddy bear best friend. Burke stated that Universal wants to get started on 'Ted 2,' "as soon as we can." This is not surprising considering 'Ted' netted the studio an impressive $394 million worldwide.
I am not leaping for joy at the announcement of either of these sequels, but for very different reasons. I really liked 'Ted,' which surprised me because I hadn't enjoyed 'Family Guy' in a long time. But MacFarlane seemed to find a new energy in films and I was looking forward to what he would do next. If that next thing is just more 'Ted,' it leaves the door open for him to start falling back hard on his usual tropes. As to 'The Bourne Legacy,' I was on board for the film conceptually as I liked the idea of seeing the other agents bred of the program that created Jason Bourne. That said, it only made sense to me as part of that franchise if it was just one film. Plus, 'The Bourne Legacy' turned out to be fairly bland and unsatisfying in my opinion, and I'd hazard I'm not alone on that. The only way a sequel works is if Matt Damon returns to join Jeremy Renner.
What do you guys think? Could these sequels work? Are you excited for either? Both?

Comment by Negro on September 18, 2012 at 5:35pm I would be up for another Bourne movie if Cross and Webb crossed paths but only if. Anything else would be a waste in my opinion. I am ambivalent to Ted either way.

Comment by Chris james on September 16, 2012 at 9:49am Ted was ok. dont care for a sequel
Comment by Bryan K on September 16, 2012 at 7:04am I haven't seen either yet. I'll make my judgement then. I will say this, I've heard that Jeremy Renner's character helps Jason Bourne in one of the books. So, Damon's return is likely. Even if it's not Bourne 5, I would love to see Damon and Renner in an action movie team-up.
Comment by Ten Drop Chris on September 15, 2012 at 10:44am I could see the Bourne Legacy movie series taking the route The Scorpion King movies did with the Mummy series. That is a line of straight to DVD/Netflix movies staring wrestlers in the lead role.
Ted was kind of funny, but not worthy of a sequel.

Comment by niggawithoutacause on September 14, 2012 at 7:37pm Really liked Ted, so hopefully Seth fixes up the mistakes he made for the first one.
Comment by Ten Drop Chris on September 14, 2012 at 4:05pm I really don't see how they could do a sequel to Ted.
