Tyrese Shoots His Way Into Comics With "Mayhem"

Tyrese Gibson is a busy guy. He's also rather self-assured, as those who remember Korey's interview with him will recall. He's an award winning musician, an actor (not so award winning, but nominated multiple times) and now he joins the ranks of people like us. People like members of The League, anyway...

That's right, Tyrese wants to be a geek. Or be among them. Or have geek fans. Or...hell, I'm not really sure. He's sure gonna know what Greg feels like hanging out with Leon and I all the time though.

"Mayhem" is a character created by Tyrese Gibson, Mike Le, Tone Rodriguez, and Will Wilson. The limited series is going to be published by Image Comics soon. Here's the description:

Los Angeles, the City of Fallen Angels. A city going down the path to ruin, being led by the biggest crime kingpin named Big X. Only one man can stem the tide of pain and drugs from flowing into the city, only one man can stop X from rotting the city from inside out. He is the embodiment of vengeance, the faceless arm of those who cannot defend themselves. He is known as Mayhem, and along with his partner Malice, they have one simple goal: dismantle X's organization, destroy the man behind the chaos, and save the city from ruin. Mayhem is a modern day gun slinging vigilante who seeks refuge in the basement of a church.

I'm always the first to say that comics need more black (and just generally non-white) superheroes. Seems like most of these characters get relegated to second or third tier status, little more than comic relief sometimes or even as sacrificial lambs for story arcs (see the fate of Goliath in Marvel's Civil War Crossover). While I'm not entirely sure there's a lot of room left for more vigilante gun-toters in comics, what the hell do I know? I'm a suburban white geek who never writes anything but criticisms of other people's work. I wish I had half the wherewithall of Tyrese to go out and GET IT DONE. Not to mention I'm a big fan of co-creator Mike Le's Hollywood insider web comic "Don't Forget to Validate Your Parking" which has been getting massive kudos from all across the industry (but I was one of the first pimpers, thank you very much).

What all this adds up to, is that there's enough talent involved in this for me to want to keep an eye on it. With the way things have been lately in the comics>movies way, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a 'test the waters' for a movie idea. Either way, Cyrus is going to check it out.

And is hoping they send him a free copy.

*cough cough*

Is this thing on?

Yeah... This is not going to be good. He doesnt sound like a comic book fan he sounds like someone who is testing the waters of what he can do, so far the synopsis seems like something a middle schooler came up with. taking aspiration from the punisher and daredevil.

NOTHING...can be worse than the Kevin Nash comic book. Not even the worst Loeb story.

I hate to point out something that seems fairly obvious, but the only reason I can see Tyrese wanting to create a black comic-book character (who isn't Blade) is so that if it becomes popular he could then have first dibs at playing the guy in a movie.

Too bad the job will probably go to Denzel anyway...still, give him points for trying.

let's hope this comic turns out better then the other celeb inspiried super heroes... like the ultimate warrior and kevin nash.

ok those were just comics based off pro wrestlers and not celebrities, but still they made them and they were pretty damn awful.

Tyrese is the man. His interviews with Korey were fun and he just seemed like a sincere guy. I'll collect it just because I like the fact he came back to spill to do another interview. I hope he does more.

Congratulations, you bitchy Evangelion fanboys, you got your movie. Evangelion 1.0 is probably one of the most faithful movie adaptations you'll ever get (or at least one you'll bitch the least about). It follows the original story, makes no dras...
