'Twilight' Writer to Pen 'Highlander' Reboot

Source: THR

It's not bad enough that Summit Entertainment and 'Twilight' screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg have forever tainted the vampire legend, now they're setting their sites on another legend - the 'Highlander'. Considered to be a cult classic, the original 'Highlander' film starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown as a trio of immortal warriors doomed to wander the earth until they eventually kill each other. It gave us terms like "The Gathering", "The Quickening", "There Can Be Only One", a long series of subpar television and direct-to-video sequels, and quite possibly the rocking-est Queen soundtrack ever.

But with Summit's great lidless eye wreathed in flame bearing down upon the franchise, are we prepared for a brooding, glittery Highlander? While it's true that the first movie had it's share of melodramatic mourning over the fact that main protagonist Connor McCloud (Lambert) never ages yet his true love does, is that really the point of the series? Or is it just a convenient backstory for a bald, Frankenstein-looking Clancy Brown to swing a massive broadsword at a katana-wielding Scot in a trenchcoat?

Justin Lin, best known for 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift', has been attached to direct, which may sound like a bad idea. However, he also directed the "Modern Warfare" episode of Community - arguably the best episode of the series - so he might actually be the best part of this news. Conversely, the script is currently undergoing a rewrite under the ham-hands of Cormac and Marianne Wibberley - the duo behind such classic films such as 'The Shaggy Dog', 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets', and 'G-Force'.

What do you think? Is this the kiss of death for a dwindling franchise, or a breath of fresh air the films could use?

I was actually looking forward to this. After going to France with my girlfriend and her family, all we watched was the original film and the tv series cuz her dad is a big fan and I got really into it. They were all against the remake until I told them who as directing it (they loved Tokyo Drift, I didn't but I loved F&F) but now I can just imagine their reactions when I say "You know the Quickenings? Yeah, instead of lightning striking them and explosions, the sun will shine and they'll sparkle!"

I For one think this series should never ever be remade. No one could ever replace Christopher Lambert or Adrien Paul.

There are only a handfull of people who should work on the reboot and one of them should be Peter Jackson.

I nearly had a Charlton Heston moment after reading this (i.e. yelling "DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!").

I take this as further evidence that Hellyweird has run out of original (never mind good) ideas. Nuke it from orbit.
