Tron Legacy is just one of those movies, one of those movies that we see maybe once or twice a year, twice in '10 thanks to Inception, that fits right in with the big bugdet Summerfests like Transformers but offers more than what we usally expect.
Movies like Iron Man, The Dark Knight and Star Trek are those movies that choose not give you a run of the mill stupid check-yer-mind-off-at-the-door experience but choose to give you more, in the case of Inception, it was a complex storyline, in the case of Tron Legacy it's groundbreaking visuals.
You might be casually saying "Well isn't that what you'd get with any Summer Blockbuster?", no dear reader, no, not like this, rarely do I see a movie where my mind spends most of the runtime going "Damn that looks cool!" and "Oh my god that's looks amazing!".
The story follows Sam Flynn (Garret Hedlund), son of Software Engineer Kevin Flynn (Jeff "The Dude" Bridges) as he looks into his father's mysterious disappearence twenty years ago, he snoops around at Flynn's, his dad's arcade and gets sucked into The Grid, a Virtual World, where Computer programs can look hotter than any Horny teenager's fantasy, The Grid is run by Clu (Jeff Bridges) who we might as well call Caesar who's cooking up some evil shit.
This movie also employs "Benjamin Button" technology where Jeff Bridges plays Flynn and looks like Jeff Bridges and Jeff Bridges plays Clu and looked like early 80s Jeff Bridges which is, as you can probably tell, pretty darn cool.

Now I've talked about Tron's visual's which should be the only reason you watch this movie by the way, I'd like to delve into Daft Punk's score but before that I'll mention the story, even though I loved this movie I won't deny that they could've done much more work in the story department while still showcasing this technology, if you look hard enough you can find big plot holes but I looked beyond them and had a blast.
Let's look at this the other way around, when a plot driven Indie movie comes out, why doesn't anyone complain about the fact that the budget is too small? because visuals aren't the point, It's the story and characters that matter and in my opinion that same logic should be used with movies like Tron Legacy.

I would much rather had a great story interwoven with these visuals, that would've increased my love for this film but that just isn't the case, the technology is still new and risky. A ton of money was spent on this movie and they wanted to appeal to a mass audience to ensure getting that money back.
And even though there wasn't much meat to chew on, Jeff Bridges, Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde (absolutely gorgeous) did a pretty good job, and the side characters, though they didn't have much time onscreen, were pretty fun like Michael Sheen who was playing Zuse, a more over-the-top and crazy hybrid of The Joker and Jack Sparrow and Beau Garret who's an example of line 19 of this blog.
Now on to very hyped up score by Daft Punk, I honestly can't describe it. watch the movie and you'll know or check out some tracks on Youtube, but in short it lives up to the hype and more.
In conclusion Tron Legacy is easily one of the best looking movies of all time and one of the best movies of the year, and here's the catch, I haven't seen the 3D version, I watched it in a regular theater and I still think it's groundbreaking, go in to watch the visuals first, experience those visuals with the music second and take in the story last.

Comment by Megatron rox on January 5, 2011 at 10:41pm Thanks a lot, this review is the second review I've written in a long time and one I'm actually proud of, so I'm really happy everyone likes it, I 've written two more reviews for practice but I don't think I'll be putting those up because they're just random reviews of movies I own on DVD which I havent had the time to watch.
Also I fully agree with you on the story, sure it's nothing new but it's solid, and I'd love a sequel too, I've gotten enough positive feedback to continue on, hopefully I'll be able to churn out a review atleast twice or thrice a month and I love writing so... all is good.
Comment by C.H. Gorog on December 27, 2010 at 4:56pm Good review; informative and humorous. I'm really happy to see that you didn't do a "8 out of 10" type of review where your feelings on the film weren't transformed into an overly simplistic numerical model of your opinions. While the story wasn't anything new, it did provide some surprises here and there and it was pretty solid. Liked the acting (except for Michael Sheen's 'crazy dance') and I would love to see a sequel in the near future. Also, this movie is pretty dark for a Disney film, but that's just my opinion.
I disagree with Leon on the 3D as it was incorporated, but not dizzying like in Avatar (on another note, why are critics condemning this movie for visuals over storytelling when they praised Avatar?).

Thanks a lot!

Good thing I still haven't seen it, I can avoid it now thanks
Thanks, I'm rewatching the movie in 3D tommorow, I'll comment here about what I thought about it.
Comment by Matthew Broughton on December 26, 2010 at 8:31am good review, i felt that way too.
i watched it in 3D (cause it was the only one available), and it didn't really make it that much better, though it did have better 3D then a lot of other movies that came out this year, i'm not really sure if it's really worth an extra $3 or so.
