Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen - The IMAX Experience Review (Also Addressing Brought Up Issues)

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - The IMAX Experience Review...& Addressing Brought Up Issues
How do the Autobots and Decepticons look in IMAX? Are the Twins really that annoying? Does this sequel really blow?

REVIEW OF THE IMAX EXPERIENCE ITSELF
Optimus Prime fighting three Decepticons at once in a forest. The Fallen and his Decepticon soldiers on top of a giant pyramid. Autobots and Decepticons brawling in the Egyptian Desert. How does this all look on the IMAX screen?

Incredible, massive and expansive.

Words cannot describe how incredible this film looked in IMAX. Now, I know many of you may bring up this point: "Everything looks better in IMAX". While that's true, it's not always worth your money, and it's not always that much of an upgrade. What separates this from other IMAX Experiences, such as The Day The Earth Stood Still and Watchmen, is the actual use of IMAX cameras and the cinematography in the film itself. There were about three scenes total shot with IMAX cameras, and when they came people actually applauded and gasped. The scenes looked absolutely beautiful. The image had so much depth, it was so clear, and so massive that it just blew me away. I have not experienced something like this since The Dark Knight IMAX Experience last year.

The film itself also brings out the best in IMAX. Many people believe that IMAX brings the best out in a film, but I think it's vice versa. You need an epic action flick for IMAX to work. When I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still in IMAX I was impressed with the image clarity, but it wasn't an 'experience'. The screen looked average size and when the CGI came into play I still felt like something was missing. Watchmen in IMAX had the same problem. I saw Watchmen in a conventional theater, but had seen glimpses of it in IMAX. The image was sharper and the sound was great, but it wasn't worth paying $15.00 over. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen gives us a wild ride, and when it's seen in IMAX it's a million times better. Even when the scenes weren't using IMAX cameras, the image was still massive and incredibly clear. Even the credits looked good. Sounds stupid, but it's true.

Overall the IMAX Experience is DEFINITELY worth it for this film. I don't regret spending one penny on my ticket. Hell, my brother basically got a free ticket for doing one of those offers on Fandango! I highly recommend people see this in IMAX if they're able to. You won't be disappointed.

IMAX Experience Rating: BETTER THAN SEX!!!

THE FILM
I was skeptical coming to see this film. The critic reviews were poor for the movie and The Spill Crew seemed to really dislike it. Even Carlyle hated it and I agreed with him on the first film. I was one of the people that loved the first installment. It was a huge action flick and the perfect summer blockbuster/pop-corn flick. The story was a little corny, but the effects and the fights were incredible. I was hoping Revenge of the Fallen would bring back the same things.

I'm happy to say it did. It brought back everything that was good in the first film and pumped it up on steroids. More Transformers and more screen time for them. More explosions. More intense battles. More incredible effects. More hot rides and hot chicks. What else do you want in a summer/pop-corn flick? This film delivered, and while it had some minor flaws, it was nothing that took me away from liking the film.

In the Spill Audio Review, there was an early retort made by Korey. He said some people will say "It's just robots fighting and blowing shit up, what did you expect?" (Not quoting it directly, just from what I remember). He said he expected a decent story and some character development. While I agree that these things should be in a film, I don't agree that one should expect this with Transformers. You HAVE to expect a corny ass story and no character development...it's Michael Bay and it's Transformers. He's going to do the same thing he's been doing all these years: blow shit up. But I still respect Korey's opinion.

The story in Revenge of the Fallen is probably just as corny as the first, but I actually liked it a lot more. Sam is once again caught up in the war between the Autobots and Decepticons, only this time you get a little more history as to why they're fighting. We learn things that Optimus should have told Sam from the beginning. I felt there was a background story missing in the original installment, and this one fills in the gaps. But don't get me wrong it's still corny, but also cool for some reason. I felt like a kid again and I was actually engaged with these guys brawling it out. It's much more personal this time.

As for the acting...it's pretty medicore. Don't get me wrong because some did well, like Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, and Shia LaBeouf. All of the voice acting was also very well done. I still love Hugo Weaving as Megatron, and all of the other Transformers did a great job. But that's pretty much it. Everyone else doesn't seem to try as much and there are corny one-liners. Some work, but some don't. But there's so much action in this film it wont bother you at all. There are very few dialogue scenes in this film because most of this movie is composed of Transformers blowing shit up and fighting one another.

Finally, the CGI looked incredible. I told my self it's impossible to top what they did in the first installment, but they proved me wrong. The Transformers look as if they're really in the environment interacting with the humans. This film seriously needs to be considered for an Oscar in the Visual Effects department...hell it should win it. The people that work on these Transformers do an amazing job.

Overall, if you liked the first film you'll probably end up liking this one. The action is pumped up, and if that's what you're seeing it for then you're all set. If you want an improved story from the first one, this film will NOT give you what you're looking for. Just don't expect so much -- turn off your mind, eat your popcorn, and enjoy!

P.S. - Cyrus c'mon man! Just because people like this movie doesn't mean they have no taste in film! My absolute favorite movies are films like The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, Frost/Nixon etc. and I still loved this film. I'm 19 and I'm not going to look back at this and say "What the hell was I watching?" It was a lot of fun. Everyone has their own opinions.

My Spill Rating for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - FULL PRICE!!!

ISSUES/CONTROVERSY

The Twins
Before seeing this film, I heard everyone nag and nag about 'The Twins'. From what I read they were supposed to be some of the most stereotypical and annoying characters since Jar Jar Binks. QUIT THE EXAGGERATION PEOPLE! They weren't even that offensive. They weren't even annoying. They were just comic relief. There are a lot more offensive things out there in the world of film, and many of them are a lot more stereotypical and offensive than this. I even had a black dude sitting next to me and I had talked to him before the film began because he seemed like a hard-core Transformers fan. Guess what? He cracked up when these guys came on screen. The whole theater did! They're pretty funny, and they don't even have that much screen time! My opinion is: QUIT COMPLAINING. Your over-hyping something dumb. The voice actors took these characters into the direction they wanted to. They don't take away from the film at all.

The Michael Bay World
Another issue people have is the 'Michael Bay World' aspect of the film: All the women are hot and everything is exaggerated. I'm fine with exaggerated action, but I personally think Bay needs to be more realistic with the people he's shooting. Everyone looks like a model, running around in a world of machines fighting each other. Don't get me wrong, I love looking at the hot babes, but seriously sometimes it's over exaggerated.

The Length
I'm the type of guy that likes long films, but only if it has a purpose OR if it's for some bad-ass action. I felt like this film went incredibly fast for being 2 hrs. and 30 min. There is just so much action that the time barely becomes a factor. The film feels much shorter that what it was. The only way you can become bored with this movie is if you think giant robots fighting and blowing shit up is boring. Not your thing? Then you might be looking at your watch extensively while you watch this movie. If you enjoy this kind of thing, kick back and enjoy the mayhem!

CONCLUSION
Hope I addressed most issues people had with the movie. I also hope I was able to help you in your decision in regard to seeing this film in IMAX or in a regular theater. Take it easy Spillios. Also, if you're going to leave dumb-ass comments or rants you can just fuck off =]. I accept all opinions, as long as they're written respectively. Take it easy everyone!

Still hyped over the action...

I totally understand you. Specially when it comes to games, I'm a hell of a critiq, cause I see that, if we dont critique the titles, the producers will continue thinking: "Its working! We dont have to pay much for a good story and every one enjoys it" and I personaly hate the game generation right now! Most of the titles (not all of them) are beeing wasted! They are not making games like old times, where they were used to innovate, and create a whole new style at each title. Now they are only thinking about high graphics and high marketing investiment. And as a gamer, and illustrator, it pisses me off! Many ppl can stand 40 hrs in a bad rpg that doesnt innovate at all! I cant do that! I already paid much for a game that was originally great, but suddenly, the producers manage to destroy it! (see Need for Speed series >.<)

Although originally this discussion isnt about games, I think we can make a parallel about it right? So, the same way the game industry isnt innovating with their storytelling, so as the hollywood industry. But, a movie, you stand 2 / 2:30 hours top in front of it. With games its a lot more intense. Sometimes its way more than 20/30 hours. In a movie, I can stand the time because of the graphics and the high battle scenes cause I looove it, but in games, eventually after its 7 hours, things get pretty boring in most cases.

Well, now on game industry, some of the biggest ones are realizing their mistake, and I hoooope that great amazing zomg incredible titles like Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII wont be affected by the producers time of totally-art-block-and-temporarily-dumbness *rant* . Thats basically the same disease the cinema is suffering. Transformers 2 could be, oh jeez, so much many more and more times amaaaaazing! But because Michael Bay was only thinking about the mind blowing scenes, he didnt worked on the rest. The story if told in a different way, could be so good and so less boring for most of ppl.

The movie industry is suffering more from the totally-art-block-and-temporarily-dumbness disease than the game industry. Somehow games are still having better releases in a year than hollywood (vide GTA 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Left 4 Dead, Persona 4 and much more all in 2008). But I wonder, what can we do to make it better? Does the bad reviews actually help? For what I know, Michael Bay sorta directors dont read or care about any kind of reviews...

Anyway, I highly encourage everyone at least try to see a movie even if all reviews are bad, cause you may form a different opinion about that title. So as games. But games are more expansive, so I'm the kind of ppl that download a game first before buying the original (specially cause where I live the originals are like the more expansive thing in the world). Sometimes games that many ppl dont like, I enjoy. Mirror's Edge for example, many ppl killed the game. I loved! Bought the original after 3 hours of gameplay.

Well, thanks ryante for reading my also big comments. I agree that we must criticize things most of times, but not all time. Sometimes is good just to sit, and enjoy the mindless battles and high graphics (like I did with Transformers 2 and in games, Star Ocean 4). ;)

well if you didnt have a problem with those rascist twins i freakin did you know why because they were annoying
stupid black robots obviously and why do they have to put them in this movie why they might as well make a short film on the two idiots and some scenes like the 'Transformation' that Optimus and Jetfire was not even worth the time in doing but it was great to look at then you have Fallen and Optimus final fight scene and i dont know if anyone esle had this problem but this fight had to be the shortest one i have ever seen for me i thought there were going to be people and robot parts flyig everywhere and even Fallen should of had the chance to fight back he has physchic powers!! how the hell didnt he stand the chance and one last thing why would only a prime be able to kill fallen i mean if megatron is a normal then he wouldn't kill prime or was it just this honor thing going on that a king should fight a king cause Optimus and The Fallen were leaders of the Autobots and Decepticons

I understand your way... Most of times I think just like you, specially when related to games and art. But, I have a fall for robots and amazing CGs. The story, on my guess, was good, but Michael Bay, on his atempt to show hot girls and great cgs that only money can buy, made an epic fail on transformers 2. My eyes shine just to think on how many details I saw on that movie and I believe that most ppl didnt notice.

I'm honestly going to see that movie again for the CG and battle quality. Cause I love to, sometimes, forget my perfeccionist side and just enjoy the moment.

I do agree with you that, if all directors were like Bay, the movies would be doomed! Cause even though Transformers is a robot fiction movie, that apparently have nothing to add on you, if a better director was in charge of the movie, it could be epic!

I have nothin against Michael Bay, he can have amaaaaaazing battle (lil confuse but still great) scenes on and best CGs in the world, but he did some epic fails on T2. Sometimes, seems like he totally lost the focus on the movie.

But again, T2 was a really good movie, I loved. But you cant compare with Dark Knight.

And about your option 1 and 2, I think I would pick the 1st.

In my judgement, the first Transformers was more well developed and directed. More than the 2nd.

I Dude, I just became a big fan of this site cause of the sincerity that Gabriel made the review!

I loved the movie! I'm going to see it again and again and again! Me and my friends, it was just like an incredible movie! It had its fails, like my dear Ironhide that just appeared on the screen to say "Hi", "Sam watch out" and "(Ironhides sound running to avoid the bombing)"!
Like G. said on the review about Michael Bay's world, I agree if felt a little exagerated sometimes but, overall, it was a great amazing movie!

I couldnt watch it on IMAX and I probably wont be able, so I'm just really glad that Gabriel could enjoy it for me and for many other ppl that cant go to the IMAX version.

And I also agree: "To everyone else attacking my review: you seriously hate it when someone has a different opinion than yours."
... so as "A few of you saying this is a pathetic excuse of a review. Why? Because I liked something you didn't it? If you're seriously that low that you have to condemn me for an opinion, than you seriously need to look at yourself, because I see YOU as pathetic. I've seen thousands of opinions on this site and I respect every single one. But it's ridiculous when people attack each other over a review."
Thats exactly what I think!

Man, If you dont agree with other persons review about something, GET OVER IT! You dont have to prove your opinion over someone else, what are you trying to prove? If you are not open to hear other people opinion over something, why are you searching for reviews in first place??????! You know you may find others that dont share the same mind as you! ¬_¬

Bleh, What I mean is, OPEN YOUR F**** MIND! =D Be happy!

Yes Cloud Strife the action was awesome, and the CGI was fantastic, and for the first 10 minute I was watching it thinking, "PLEASE, PLEASE don't forget yourself, know your place. No contrivance, No CONTRIVANCE:- oh no, it's contrived. and for the rest of this movie your just sitting there watching it ruin itself with all the symbols and the old prime transformers and now you're thinking, "I know there's nothing wrong with a movie purely on giant robots beating the crap out of each other why doesn't Michael Bay (being Michael Bay and all). Why do we need robots swearing, being vulgar and annoying why can't they just be badass. Yes all of them. Just be badass robots, some more talkative than others but overall plenty bearable, and then we just watch them kick the crap out of each other with a bit of plot here and there, y'know just to give it some direction - not so much where it becomes a 2 hour 30 minute wannabe epic about something that is nothing-but-it-could-be-something-or-other-about-the-revelation-of-nothing-and-other-things-that-don't-matter but you'll know in three hours - but enough for the audience to grab onto

Even the director doesn't know that it's just a silly toy movie
Comment by The Silent Protagonist on June 28, 2009 at 10:24pm
Just recently saw this Thursday. I thought it dragged. What was supposed to be kickass action at the end of the film was just boring. They could of cut out all the romance with Sam and Mikela and with Sam at college. I would've been fine with a hour and forty minute movie of just robots kicking the shit out of each other. CGI, fantastic. A lot of people have been complaining of all the action between the robots too close up and not being able to tell which robot is which. I could tell who was who when I was watching it. It's not the worst movie of the summer, but it's not great.
Comment by Miguel on June 28, 2009 at 8:19pm
Worst movie of the summer? Yeah because movies like year one and land of the lost were so fantastic...
Ryante you're pretty pathetic because you may not be calling gabriel pathetic but you're saying that his review is and thats not respecting the review. Respecting the review is saying something like "oh yeah the story is just as corny as the 1st but I came to see the second film expecting it to be less corny and I was disappointed" thats a respectful way of disagreeing with that review!!! You're right he used his personal enjoyment to color a review because he FELT it was GOOD and so did I its not a guilty pleasure. As for your whole knowing movie review example, I just saw the dan in real life movie review spill did. Everyone said rental except for cyrus because he was raised around people in that movie thats why he enjoyed the movie and gave it a full price. Now WTF is that??? Theres absolutely nothing you can say to defend that, why??? Think about it he did put his personal feelings so in a sense it was a guilty pleasure. No but lets look at it like this, maybe cyrus just liked the movie just like gabriel and I liked transformers 2. Do you see me calling cyrus wrong? No although i saw the movie and felt it was pretty boring but I'm not gonna say cyrus was full of shit because he enjoyed the movie and I respect his opinion. Ryante to put it plain and simple...you're a fuckin stuck up deuche bag who constantly contradicts yourself thinking your always right, you compared yourself to a fictional character (house) no you think you are him and your opinion will always be right. Get a fuckin life dude, don't say you're debating when you bring nothin to the table... Oh and bro trust me if you had class we wouldn't be having this little "debate"
