So, last night I watched the excellent Sherlock Holmes (with the most obnoxious crowd ever btw, but that's a blog for another day). However I was reminded yet again during the course of the film of snippets from the the trailers for the film which led me to anticipate what was to come. That ruined certain scenes for me, but of course not the whole film.


Now maybe I am a genius and have the deductive skills of Mr.Holmes (which Isn't the case at all, I simply know that one and one is two) or Trailers have rebranded themselves as Spoilers!!! Too much is now given away in movie trailers. Maybe this has always been the case, but for me I've noticed It much more over the last five years.

In Sherlock Holmes for instance, the final duel between himself and Lord Blackwood plays a memorable part in the trailer and so when you are after sitting in the theatre for an hour and forty mins, you know whats coming soon.

Now admittedly, this didn't really destroy the experience of seeing Sherlock Holmes for me, but it has for other movies.


For example, Terminator Salvation:


The trailer for that movie has no problem disclosing that Marcus is a Terminator. We don't find that out for maybe 45mins into the film. GRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrr..... Damn trailers.

Of course if a movie just isn't that good, then it is the trailer makers job to put the best bits in. But when it's genuinely a good movie, whats the point, it is going to make the money regardless. I know I would have enjoyed Avatar so much more if I hadn't seen the trailer. Some parts just didn't blow me away like the were supposed to due to exposure to the trailer. I still loved Avatar though, but could have loved it more. However, speaking of making movies look better.

Burn After Reading:


I was so excited about seeing this, but never got around to watching it until recently. The trailer looks fantastic but that's about as good as it gets,,,,,,, All the best bits are in the trailer, all of them. It had such a terrible ending and really rubbish story over all. I do think though, that had I not seen all the 'gold' from the trailer it wouldn't have pissed me off and disappointed me while watching. I mean, I was so excited. First Coen's since No Country, and they seemed to be going back to Lebowski territory. Fail!

A film that really dragged my attention to this situation was

Revenge of the Sith:


I love the original Star Wars and when this came out, I had hope. I still think it's the best prequel by a long shot (and I actually think it's better than episodes IV an VI). BUT!!!!! my first time watching experience was ruined by a trailer made up mostly of the final (could have been awesome had I not seen it all prior) lightsaber battle between Vader and Obi Wan. Also, we knew the suited up Vader was supoosed to show and when the films winding down and about to end, I think we all knew what to expect. Bloody trailers....grrrrr...



So the current situation we're in is this; either studios are so desperate to get us into they're films, they don't mind dispensing key information that goes well beyond general plot, which takes away some of the film experience OR these people who make trailers are retarded! Why don't the Directors or producers in these big great films take more control over what's being released through trailers?
