I wake up with a death wish, so today let`s get everyone angry and do the top 10 most overrated anime series. Some of this series are treated like the best of the best, and some of them really are not. I`m not saying they are bad, I`m just saying they are not THAT god. The majority of this series have the same problem, their concept has been made before and better, but their fans will say that are the best ever. So sit back and enjoy. Let the hate begins!
10. Evangelion
This in the list is reason why 99.9% of anime fans will hunt me down. A lot of people say this is the best of the best. I disagree. This is not a perfect anime, is very close to it, but is not. This is so high in fans perception that any criticism is almost a sin, even with good arguments.
9. Saint Seiya
This really pains me, I mean it. This was the first anime I follow almost religiously, like most of the kids of my generation here in Mexico, and all of us love it. Looking at it now… It`s just another fighting show with crazy powers and not that original at that. I am critic enough to recognize that it’s overrated, but I`m fan enough to love it anyway.
8. Inuyasha
This one didn’t make the cut for the top 10 anime for girls, but was very close. Let`s consider it number 11. It’s a fun show that girls reeeeeally love, and again it is not that great. I know it’s an analogy that everyone use, but is really accurate: Inuyasha is just Dragon Ball Z for girls.
7. Yuyu Hakusho
This has basically the same problem of Saint Seiya. It stars really nice and original and at the end has just another show about guys kicking their asses each other. I`m not a fan, maybe you do, just deal with the fact that is overrated.
6. Tsubasa Chronicle
I have already talked about this in the past. All I`m going to say is, come on, using the same characters again? Really? Come on.
5. Lucky Star
FUCK THIS. I don’t see why everybody loves this show that is about absolutely nothing!!! Really, fuck this one. If I want to see a simple an unfunny life, I’ll just look at the mirror. FUCK THIS SHIT
4. Soul Eater
Long history short, everyone loves it for its originality and stuff. The hard true, it’s just another version of shaman king.
3. Gundam Wing
I believe this was the one that puts Gundam in the map, at least for American eyes, and is a really good one, but a lot of people just don’t want to admit that there are best mechas out there in this crazy anime world of us. Come on, let it go. You can come back anyway.
2. Bleach
I can`t say I hate this, I just don’t like it nether understand why everyone loves it. It use the typical topic (in anime terms anyway) of the otherworld and throw at us a lot of characters, most of them useless, some “fights” that just consist in two guys looking at each others, some shiny flashes of light and that`s it. This is easily the most overrated series of them all. I`ll love to say that but I can`t because here comes the king.
1. Naruto
HOLY SHIT! Search the word overrated in the dictionary and you should find a picture of this show. I must admit that I was a fan of this anime, I mean, how could I stay away from it? Ninjas, colorful characters, what at first seems to be a good story, a catchy soundtrack, overall a good series. But then I realize that it was just the same old bullshit. This one use to be a good one, but not anymore. The repetitive plots, the tons and tons of useless characters, and the fact that it had a great potential but prefers to go the regular way makes this series a big disappointment. You know it`s true, stop denying it.
A note on Yu Yu Hakusho and Saint Seiya. You criticized them for being titles all about "fighting". Well FYI both titles are intended as fighting shonen anime/manga. so to criticize them for that reason is very wrong because thats what the genre they're intended for and you might as well criticize the fighting shonen genre.
As for Saint Seiya being a show about crazy powers and being unoriginal, keep in mind it was released in a time when anime/manga was in its infancy. So while in today's standards it seems like a generic shonen, back in the time period it literally revolutionized anime/manga and created (or refined if you take into account earlier titles such as Ring ni Kakero also from the creator of Saint Seiya) alot of those flashy "special powers" combat alongside Dragon Ball.
I assume you have the same criticisms for Dragon Ball Z that you have for Saint Seiya and Yu Yu Hakusho? :)
I really respect your opinion on Saint Seiya though-you may love the series but you are honest enough to admit its quite dated and (at least to the modern viewer) generic by today's standards. But I really think the criticism that Saint Seiya and Yu Yu Hakusho (the latter which has VERY GOOD character development even in today's shonen standards) because they're mostly fighting is flawed because they came from a genre thats basically is almost all fighting.
