Too Many Special Effects? Spielberg Thinks So.

It seems a bit odd that one of the fathers of the modern blockbuster would have a problem with computer effects, but Steven Spielberg seems to have something to say about our modern special effects.

The director recently told Empire Magazine: "There's so many tools we have now in the toolshed, and it's just a matter of individual choice of how we use these tools. I,
frankly, think that special effects are becoming too special. There are too many
special effects in all these movies today. It means that the movie starts on a
special effect, ends on a bigger special effect, and the middle is the same
special effect."

There seems to be a little hypocrisy going on here with this statement. Why is Spielberg so fed up with special effects, but the movies he makes clearly don't reflect this. I wouldn't be surprised if every single action sequence in the last Indiana Jones film was shot on a green screen, and I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to think that the majority of the effects in the Spielberg produced Transformers films were animatronics.

Okay, that may be a little harsh. He definitely isn't wrong when he says this, and I can only imagine that the untold number of filmmakers looking up to him may change their tune on just how much spectacle they really need to show. This mentality was clearly in play when Christopher Nolan made the dream-world on Inception closer in spirit to that of Heat than that of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3; truly a case of less is more, making the moments that were unreal all the more special.

It's nice to hear some truly good filmmaking advice coming from a truly great filmmaker.

Hey, Spielberg, buddy, ever heard of the word "hypocrite"? Even if he is a hypocrite though, he is sorta right. Honestly, I prefer practical effects instead of special effects. 2001: A Space Odyssey is an amazing film with amazing practical effects that effing blew my mind, and the old Star Wars movies are also great examples.

Well, in an attempt to explain what I think Spielberg's position is, let me start with a quote from an old saying:
"Do as I say, not as I do"

In my opinion, Spielberg has always been a career man. And the goal of any good career is mainly to make money, or achieve power - and that is the bottom line at the end of the day. However unfortunate it is that big and loud sells more than soft and deep now-a-days; we should try to accept the possibility that Spielberg actions may differ from what he truly believes.

His actions are likely governed by his career, and not by his heart or believes.

Mr President there's a few points I'd like to make if I may.

1. Steven is a hypocrite.
2. He collaborates with George "special effect" Lucas and produces Micheal Bay shit
3. Have you seen Kingdom of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
4. Steven's last successful film was "War of the Worlds"
Now....5 Steven is Greek for 'Crown' and Spielberg is Jewish: ornamental name from German Spiel ‘play’, ‘game’ + Berg ‘mountain’, ‘hill’. Sorry that is not the ' King of hill' anymore.

Nolan is the new Spielberg =).

Has someone made a youtube video or something comparing the Family Guy chicken fight to Revenge of the Sith's final duel?

You do know right that Spielberg actually directed a lot of the final battle scene in Sith?

Did anything think that AFTER such special effects-driven shitstorms, he came to the realization that overusing CGI and special effects to create a film instead of using "as needed" effects and focusing on story was a BAD way to go? That maybe this statement was a backhanded apology for being WRONG?

Weirder shit has happened.
