If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Just because it's proven damn near impossible to craft a worthwhile videogame-to-movie adaptation in the recent...ever does not seem to be slowing anyone down. Chief among those unfazed is Ubisoft. Late last month it was revealed that they were moving forward with their plan to bring their game series 'Assassin's Creed' to the big screen with Michael Fassbender in the lead role. Additionally, the company is looking to adapt the 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell' franchise into a movie. They don't have a definite studio partner yet, though they are chatting with both Warner Brothers and Paramount. They do however have a writer in Eric Warren Singer ('The International'), and now it seems they have an actor to play black-ops agent protagonist Sam Fisher. Ubisoft, continuing on their trend of comic book movie villains, has just signed Tom Hardy ('The Dark Knight Rises') to headline 'Splinter Cell.' The actor is currently shooting 'Mad Max: Fury Road.'
Wow. I'll say it, I am thoroughly surprised. I know Ubisoft's properties are quite successful, but I didn't think they had the clout to nail down a star like Hardy before a script is written or there's even a studio attached. I played the first game, long ago, and what I found appealing about it was the same thing I liked about the 'Hitman' games: the sneaking around to take down bad guys. I think Hardy would be killer as a black-ops agent and he more than possesses the physical presence necessary to play Sam Fischer. As much as I like Hardy, however, my real excitement level for this movie cannot be determined until a director is chosen. Maybe let Brad Bird have another shot at working within an espionage series? Or how about the man responsible for, in my opinion, two of the best James Bond films: Martin Campbell? The question now becomes, as with all movies that are based on a franchise and now just one title, which game will be the basis of the film?
What do you guys think? Does the prospect of a 'Splinter Cell' movie interest you? If so, how do you feel about Hardy taking the lead role? Who would you assign to direct?

Comment by Mr. Regarde on November 15, 2012 at 3:15pm Or news about "Deus Ex," I'd hear that too.
Seriously, good job, Carlyle.
Comment by Mr. Regarde on November 15, 2012 at 3:14pm Come back to me with some casting news about ME1 (if that project ever flies) and I may be excited.
Comment by Kroxigor on November 15, 2012 at 2:27pm <---- Not suprised

Well, looks like we've started to phase out the comic book movies and head into video game movie territory. Especially with Carlyle co-writing the Deus Ex adaptation.

Comment by C.H. Gorog on November 15, 2012 at 11:59am @BlackMagic - Hell yeah! Who doesn't love Ironside?!
Comment by C.H. Gorog on November 15, 2012 at 11:58am No Martin Campbell. After the colossal failure of Green Lantern, I'll wait until his next film to judge where he is. Besides, Splinter Cell isn't like James Bond as a spy film, especially since most of the "spy work" isn't sleeping with sexy double agents or winning card games. I would actually offer Rian Johnson the chair since he has a good understanding of when to use characterization, plot, and action. Andrew Nicol (though I was disappointed with In Time) would be a great candidate as well as he's great at character pieces that can flip back and forth between dark storytelling and humor, which Splinter Cell certainly has of both.
I'm not sure about Tom Hardy. I think he was chosen because he's a big name, not because he could be the best Sam Fisher (if they do go with Sam Fisher for the protagonist). If anyone had to fill the role, I would say Timothy Olyphant would be a great candidate.
I don't think that the franchise needs a movie since it might not work for the narratives usually employed by the series, but Ubisoft has been doing well recently with their handling of their properties and they've reportedly had more creative control over their properties' film adaptations than most companies, so go them.
Comment by BlackMagic on November 15, 2012 at 11:51am I'd much prefer, and I know it's impossible, but that Michael Ironside have some sort of involvement with this film. I mean, he is Sam Fisher. That voice just defines the character.
Comment by Carnage Kosmic on November 15, 2012 at 11:28am I think the way to succeed with a video game movie is to base it on the universe of the game not on a specific title. Take the Sam Fisher character and craft an interesting story in the Splinter Cell universe.
