Tom Cruise & Robert Downey Jr Could Re-Team For 'El Presidente'

In 2008, Ben Stiller directed a little comedy called 'Tropic Thunder,' I'm willing to bet a few of you saw it. It was the story of an epic, but troubled studio production in the jungles of Vietnam. Whether you liked or disliked this film, it is hard to argue that its two strongest elements were Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise. Cruise handed in a surprisingly hilarious turn as bloated studio exec Les Grossman while RDJ performance as an obsessive method actor was so funny that he was somehow able to get away with being in blackface. Well now it seems as if the two may reunite in the upcoming Warner Brothers' comedy 'El Presidente.' The basic premise here is that Cruise would play an overzealous secret service agent who is reassigned to guard an obnoxious former commander-in-chief. Sounds like a cushy, do-nothing job until a threat made on the former president's life forces them to go on the run. 'El Presidente' was written by Dan Goor ('Parks & Recreation'), and it looks like Jay Roach ('Austin Powers,' 'The Campaign') is currently negotiating to direct. No deals have yet been finalized.

Like I said when 'The Campaign' was announced, I have serious doubts about Jay Roach as a director. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I haven't liked any of his movies since the turn of the millennium. That being said, I love the sound of this project. Cruise and Downey Jr. playing off one another with RDJ once again getting to be the a-hole while Cruise parodies his 'Mission: Impossible' action hero status? Count me in! I'm also a huge fan of 'Parks & Rec' so I'm excited to see that Dan Goor wrote the script. While no official deals are signed as of yet, this is the kind of project one could totally see coming to fruition. Warner Brothers has a great working relationship with RDJ, thanks in no small measure to his Sherlock films, and Cruise's marketability continues to soar. The only real question is whether the two actors will be able to work 'El Presidente' into their busy schedules. Robert Downey Jr is about to begin 'Iron Man 3,' while Cruise is currently filming sci-fi actioner 'Oblivion.'

I have my fingers crossed for this one, how about you guys?

Jay Roach seems like a super smart guy that had a ton of success with the Austin Powers and Meet the Parents franchises. He does those political movies for HBO and they are really smartly written and well acted. I think The Campaign looks really good. It seems like it is a subject that he is really into.

I thought Game Change was great! I loved it but I was so into the 2008 presidential campaign that I would have loved seeing anything about that. So, yeah, he is okay in my book.

I'm still 'shocked' at both their performance in Tropic Thunder, despie the fact that it's mediocre film, but still, rewatching the movie for those 2 still worth it!!

Hmm... If both of them gonna do some surprising things there like in Tropic Thunder, I'm in!!
