The first image of Tom Cruise as rock star Stacee Jaxx in the upcoming musical 'Rock of Ages' has been released. In addition to directing, Adam Shankman is also creating the choreography for the New Line Cinema adaptation of the rock-jukebox musical. Originally portrayed by 'Nerdist' podcaster Chris Hardwick on Broadway, Cruise plays the self-centered, washed-up rocker Jaxx - soon to be ex-singer for the fictional band Arsenal who sets the entire plot into motion by sleeping with Sherrie, the hopeful waitress who main protagonist Drew Boley is in love with. As the film progresses, prepare for Cruise to cover a variety of 1980's glam metal songs including 'Wanted Dead or Alive' and 'I Want to Know What Love is'.

'Rock of Ages' - also starring Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, and Paul Giamatti - will be in theaters in 2012.

I was listening to "Edge of Glory" by Lady Gaga (don't judge me) when I was checking Spill updates, and just as the song exploded into its chorus, I saw the thumbnail for this image. I haven't been able to stop laughing!

If they let him have a sense of humor about the character then this will be great.

@Einrick Quiznos

You're right. My rant is aimed more at teens. I can garantee you if you come to my school or any other school  and ask people who A7X or SoD are 95% of them will stare at you with a blank expression. I also know of other more awesome bands like Dream Theater, Enciferum, Children of Bhodom and Rhapsody of Fire.

" Am I the only one who is pumped for this? "

No.

" I'm 17 and I almost exclusevely listen to pre 21st century music. Except for some bands that are ignored by today's population like Avenged Sevenfold and System of A Down, their really isn't anything worth listening to now a days. "

   I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic with that comment, or not. You realize those two bands are about as mainstream Alternative Rock as you can get these days, right? It may be your age, or that you may be in high school where your peers listen to mainstream hip hop, but to outside ears, your choice of music may also be considered tame, or generic as well, when considering the TONS of great metal and rock bands that expand upon the great musicianship of that genre.

May the heaviest of metal envelop your soul, and be born again of fire...up the irons, young'n, up the irons....

Am I the only one who is pumped for this? In a modern age filled with crap, robotic and electronicaly produced music( if you wanna call it that, I don't) it will be nice to see a musical with some good old fashionned ROCK AND ROLL!!!! Fuck Bieber, Fuck whatever rapper is popular now, and fuck Gaga,bring on BonJovi Twisted Sister, Journey and Styx. Hopefully this will start a new wave of rock and get kids to listen to their parent's old albums. I'm 17 and I almost exclusevely listen to pre 21st century music. Except for some bands that are ignored by today's population like Avenged Sevenfold and System of A Down, their really isn't anything worth listening to now a days. Unless you want to hear the same drumbeat coupled with shittones of autotune.
