This Just In...New Home Releases For 3/29/11

Another week, another fresh slate of new home releases to check out. There's a lot of product hitting the shelves this week, so much so even I couldn't get to it all, but let's start off as usual with the...

BLACK SWAN (Blu-Ray and DVD)

Well, duh. Was there any doubt that my fave movie of the year was gonna be the best Blu-Ray pick of the week as well? Natalie Portman earns the shit out of her Oscar win playing the craziest professional dancer ever. And that's REALLY saying something. This visually sumptuous film (I FINALLY got to use the word 'sumptuous' in a sentence. Yay for me!) is essential to have in the highest quality ever so this is a no-brainer of a buy, especially when you add in the sweet bonus features, like a 49 minute doc. Sweet.

...and then there's the rest...

APOCALYPSE: WWII (Blu-Ray and DVD)

There's an awful lot of World War II documentary series coming out lately. Even the French are getting into the act here with their 6 part television series. No, it's not just footage of them running away, smart-ass.

FAIR GAME (blu-Ray and DVD)

This Doug Liman-helmed 2010 political thriller about CIA agent Natalie Plume (Naomi Watts) and how White House officials threw her and all her informants under a bus in an attempt to discredit her rabble-rousing husband (Sean Penn), didn't seem to really get the chance it deserved in theaters. CONSPIRACY! CONSPIRACY!

MADE IN DAGENHAM (Blu-Ray and DVD)

This charming little comedy led by the irresistibly likable Sally Hawkins was based on the real-life struggles of the women workers at the Ford Auto Plant in the UK where their unprecedented strike led eventually to landmark equal rights registration. Plus, they're in their underwear for a good part of the film so, you know, there's that.

MAD MEN: SEASON 4 (Blu-Ray and DVD)

AMC's little show that could continues on into its fourth year, with John Hamm continuing to make the ladies sigh as the charismatic 1960s ad executive Don Draper, and Christina Hendricks makes the guys have to go have special 'private time', in the bust-out role that made her a household name.

MESRINE: PUBLIC ENEMY #1 (Blu-Ray and DVD)

This is the second of two films (the first is "Mesrine: Killer Instinct") about the life of infamous French gangster Jacques Mesrine, played by the always-reliably-crazy-looking, Vincent Cassel who was well-lauded for his performances in the immensely popular series. Literally covered with laud. Ass-loads of laud. Oh laud, he's traveled so far.

THE RESIDENT (Blu-Ray and DVD)

This 2011 horror film starring Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lee Pace, and Christopher Lee about a stalky landlord is getting more notice for being one of the first productions from the famous Hammer Films studios in quite some time...not that it's exactly getting swamped with rave reviews, but that's enough for ME to want to give it a look.

SCREAM TRILOGY (Blu-Ray)

What with the fourth installment of Wes Craven's self-aware horror series about to be released, no time like the present to revisit the original three totally fun slasher-comedies, now upgraded to Blu-Ray. Well, the first two are worth re-visiting at least.

TANGLED (Blu-Ray and DVD)

If not for the power of the "Swan", this certainly would have been the pick of the week, as Disney's animated take on Rapunzel is clever, fast paced, gorgeous, and funny. Especially that damn horse. If any character should get a spin-off, it's the horse. Always with the long face. He kills me. Oh yeah, and it's a Disney animated film so, as always, lots of cool bonus features.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (Blu-Ray)

The First Spill Commandment: Thou shalt not give Cyrus crap for having warm and fuzzy nostalgic remembrances of this 1956 awesome biblical epic starring Charlton Heston as the holy bearded guy with all the rules from the boss. I'd like to reedit this some day as a con-film. Seriously though, there are those who call it one of the greatest films of all time. I don't know about that, but it's certainly worthy of an upgrade to Blu-Ray and a nostalgic revisit.

TREME: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (Blu-Ray and DVD)

HBO's new series set in post-Katrina New Orleans hits it WAY out of the park with its top-notch performances, astonishing musical sequences, and adherence to realism in this ten episode set that the people of the city have largely embraced as accurately translating the spirit of the rebuild. Fascinating and inspiring.

I loved Black Swan, I really did, but it only ranked #8 on my top 10 last year. There's two reasons:

1. I love the Cronenberg-esque body horror stuff, but I wasn't digging the CGI later in the film. I thought that was a bit much.

2. I didn't really have a severe emotional reaction like some others have (Yes, including you Cyrus). The Wrestler has become one of my favorite movies because Mickey Rourke was very sympathetic, and I was almost in tears by the end of that movie. Here, I didn't find Natslie Portman very sympathetic. I understood her character, but I would more likely stay away from her.

I'm with CHEEZYSPAM on that one, I loved "The Fountain". Non-commercial as hell? Yes. Lyrically poetic and non-linear? Yes. But bad? Oh hell no.

@DarkProphet94, "which doesnt include The Fountain for obvious reasons"

What!? The Fountain was amazing and completely under rated! I love the hell out of that movie and it always tugs at my heart strings every time I think of it. It was visually gorgeous, emotional, beautifully told story. On the outside, no... it wasn't a commercial success and I don't think the studios had any idea how to market it, but it was a fantastic multi-layered deep film.

Admittedly, it took a second viewing to fully appreciate it... but it quickly became one of my favorite movies that he's done.

Also, the King's Speech will be released April 19th and from my understanding it WILL be the 'R' rating. The kid-friendly version is only being re-released in theaters (at this point)

Aman, it's very different, especially with not being a cop show.

if i had the money, id definitely add Black Swan next to my Aronofsky collection (which doesnt include The Fountain for obvious reasons). BTW, u wouldnt happen to know if The King's Speech is gonna be out soon with the original R version, would u? cause im actually kinda itchin to see it.

Cyrus, answering a question before it's asked!?  quit your damn time traveling ways!

Ed, that depends on what you like to watch repeatedly. I mean, there couldn't be more apples and oranges titles to compare than those two.
