This Just In...New Home Releases for 3/22/11

That's right kids, it's time for another weekly glance at the NEW RELEASES on DVD and Blu-Ray at your local home vide...erm...hmmm. I guess, a look at the stuff that just came out that you can actually buy/stream now. Not a lot of local home video stores around so much anymore. But first, let's lead this off as usual with a look of the best of the best in weekly viewing/buying choices, the...

THE VENTURE BROTHERS: THE COMPLETE SEASON 4 (Blu-Ray and DVD)

The best damn animated show currently on television has finally released the home version of its fourth season (16 episodes), or for those who bought the "Season 4: Part 1" set, Part 2 is available separately as well. The really good news? Not gonna be the last season after all. Awesomesauce.

...and then there's the rest...

DARK FIELDS (DVD)

No, seriously, THIS one is David Carradine's last film...I think. Hell, no one knows anymore, but this is a direct-to-dvd horror about a town that turned long ago to child sacrifice to relieve a drought, and generations later suffers from a curse because of it. So, a real feel-good movie I'm guessing.

FIREBREATHER (Blu-Ray and DVD)

This first-ever CG movie by the folks at the Cartoon Network is based on the Image Comics series about a half-dragon teen who is split between those who want him to explore his monstrous side, and his own desire to be a normal teen and chase tail. Not his own, mind you.

SKYLINE (Blu-Ray and DVD)

Personally, I thought the bitching about this cheaply made 2010 alien invasion film was a bit hyperbolic. Which isn't to say it was GOOD, per say, but when I say, 'High Rental', I'm being literal in this case.

STAND BY ME: 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Blu-Ray and DVD)

Rob Reiner's 1986 film still holds up as the greatest 'coming of age' film ever made, also (more or less) launching the careers of Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell, two of which (Wheaton and Feldman) show up for a cool new PIP video feature in this gorgeously cleaned up blu-ray.

THE TOURIST (Blu-Ray and DVD)

Angelina Jolie is a secret agent leading a gobsmacked tourist (Johnny Depp) around Venice by the short and curlies, using him to distract the various folks trying to track down her spy boyfriend. I thought this was classy and fun in and old-school way. Maybe not Golden Globe Nomination classy, but classy nonetheless.

YOGI BEAR (Blu-Ray and DVD)

I'll cotton to, at the very least, that this 2010 CG/Live action adaptation of the old Hannah Barbara cartoon was not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. Hey, Dan Aykroyd NAILS the voice of Yogi, to be sure. But that's about as far as I'm willing to go. Sorry, Satan, no deal is worth this.

Love Stand By Me. It never gets old. Calling it the "greatest coming of age film" wouldn't be wrong. I do enjoy the Sandlot though.

I'm thinking I need to watch "Skyline". It sounds hysterical from what everyone has been saying

"Greatest Coming of Age Film" = Almost Famous.

For me, I still have to say The Sandlot is a better coming-of-age movie, even though I can definitely see the influence that Stand By Me had on it looking back.
