It's been a while so I decided to write another random blog about something I thought about while watching a movie from the 3.99 bin. That topic today kiddies have to do with elements of a movie that are so cliché that they take you out of the film and leave you thinking “Did they really have to put that in there?” Confused ? I shall explain myself. There are many times when I sat down to watch a film that I find myself enjoying the plot but there was always something added into the movie whether it be a certain way a scene was shot or a cheesy opening even a cliché line that removed me from my film going experience and left me going “Que?”.
#1. Antagonist intro
We’ve all have seen that scene where the movie going audience is introduced to the main antagonist. In most films you can spot this person easily either due to the slow pan from their feet to their face or if they’re a real bad ass they step out from the shadows and reveal themselves to Bumbling victim #1.
#2. Star Crossed Lovers
I would hate to pan Shakespeare’s’ Romeo and Juliet but it’s the perfect example for another cliché that sucks the life out of a film. You have to two sexy main characters who have never met each other but as soon as their eyes meet the crowd around them becomes blurry and for some reason time begins to slow down. Now, if that were to happen in real life I would be a bit frightened. I guess this cliché is playing off of the idea that time stands still …I don’t know.
#3. City Mouse/ Country Mouse
Another cliché that is used but hasn’t been used as much in this general term is the use of the little mouse in the big city. This term could be compared to Mary Tyler Moores’ TV show opening. An innocent bumpkin enters the big city one suitcase in hand twirling around under the lights of the big city. The bumpkin who is usually our main character has to learn quickly that life isn’t the same back home and after an hour and a half of story lines and living the good life realizes that there’s no place like home and returns.
I could go on and on about all of the clichés that I’ve seen but I’d rather read your responses. Are there any clichés that are used that leave you thinking “I’ve seen that before…”?
