After a not so well hidden development cycle and quite a few leaks over the past few months, today Game Informer revealed the game that will be the cover for their April issue, Thief. What was originally planned to be the fourth entry in the first person stealth franchise is now going to be a full on reboot of the series. The game will still focus on protagonist Garret who returns to Victorian-esque industrial city known only as... The City. Garret will have to make his way through the decaying buildings to steal many riches, whilst also having to deal with a people rife with political tension due to a debilitating plague. All the while being constantly under the eye of The City's political leader, as well as the game's antagonist, The Baron. Edios Montreal has apparently been working on this game for quite a while and hopes to introduce new players into the world they have crafted as well as allow for long time series fans to feel right at home. Thief is currently in the works for the PS4, PC, and other next-gen consoles *cough* 720.

A reboot is probably the best thing they can do for this series. Nothing would turn newcomers off than to see something they haven't seen before, and have it be the fourth entry in seemingly long running franchise. Also getting rid of the previously horrible title, "Thi4f" can do nothing but good. That being said I'm getting some pretty strong Dishonored vibes from this. Now before you chastise me, I know very well that this series has been around long before Dishonored. And even some the developers of Dishonored have stated that the Thief series was a huge influence on how the made the game. But seriously? Pseudo future, plague, political tension, and one word name bad-guy? You can't see these and not compare the two. Feel free to berate me if these elements had been in place in the previous entries in the series because I have not played them. If Edios Montreal can however create a game that is even half as fun as Dishonored was then this will probably do very well.

Have you played any of the previous Thief games? What elements do you hope carry over to the reboot?

These guys also have sales every so often, and you can look at screenshots here of it running on something more modern.  The graphics hold up just barely, but the game is very gameplay and story driven.  The thing is, if you have played many of the newer games with stealth ideas and mechanics, the game will not resonate the same.  It is still very playable, just the years have stripped away the polish and amazement the gave fresh eyed players back in late 98 and 99.

Wait until there's a Steam sale. I remember during the winter sale they had the entire Thief collection for less than 10 bucks.

Dang Wodenson... Now I feel like an asshole for not playing them haha. If they ever port it to Xbox On Demand then I'll have to get it, or maybe just whenever I get a better computer.

"Feel free to berate me if these elements had been in place in the previous entries in the series because I have not played them."  *begins the berating*

The first Thief from the amazing crew at Looking Glass Studios was a giant leap forward in PC gaming.  Part of your HUD included a gemstone that was pitch black when you were completely concealed in the shadows to glowing green when you could easily be spotted by anyone as if in daylight.  This was the creation of the realisticish stealth genre and excelled from the start. The game engine fully utilized surround sound with depth so that you needed surround sound to get the full feel for the game.  Just by listening you could tell if guards were down the hall, about how far down the hall, and how many there were.  Different surfaces made different noises, walking on stone was different then wood or metal or a rug.  Objects like glasses could be picked up and thrown to make the guards go investigate the noise.  Bodies could be found on guard patrols causing them to be on high alert.  And this is just the gameplay, the story was set in a pseudo future Victorian city with political intrigue, plague, disease, unrest, grand schemes to dominate mankind, etc.  The first true foray into something like this from a first person perspective and they absolutely nailed it.  Different ways to accomplish the goals, kill everyone, sneak this way, that way, every other way, make distractions, use rope arrows to climb to that window, the options seemed endless and gave you such a connection to Garret cause he was your version of Garret, not the same guy everyone played the game as.  The decisions were yours so the game and story felt like it was yours.  This game was the reason I bought a creative Sound Blaster Live Platinum with Live Drive IR that had digital optical out and a digital 5.1 surround system with magnetically shielded speakers from Outpost.com

This game along with Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis made me the jaded person I am today.  They formed this ideal that video games should and could be actually living, breathing worlds where the player character is merely one of the world's inhabitants.  The world was there before, it will be there after, but you could also leave your mark and make a difference.  Having played JRPGs up until then where the world freezes until you show up and freezes again until you return, these two games exposed that vacuum and cardboard background.  Those 2 games showed me that I did not have to play a movie or novel where everything was predetermined and I just go along for the ride, but there are main points of the story and world that are the same for everyone, but the details and the real meat of it belongs to you and you alone as you became co-author.

That said, I am doing my best to hold down expectations of this reboot as I find myself often hoping for more than is delivered and become disappointed.  If I expect less, then maybe I will get it free of disappointment.
