Admiral Phil-Good posted a statusAfter seeing The Woman In Black on the big screen I came out of it with mixed feelings, yes I did enjoy it, yes (I hate to say this) I thought that Daniel Radcliffe was rather good as Arthur Kibbs, a young lawyer who travels to a small village only to discover that a vengeful ghost is terrorizing the locals. I am one of the people who bashed Radcliffe for his portrayal as Harry Potter, watching those films I found him increasingly wooden with each film, though in WIB (Woman In Black) he was rather good and there was a sombre mood about his approach to the role. I could really see potential in Radcliffe after seeing him in this, I did think he portrayed a grieving man rather well without going overboard with constant crying which could have happened.
The film itself starts off on a sombre level with three girls hurling themselves from a window. It does have some shocking imagery and some very jumpy moments within the film. Though if you had any sense at all you could see the jump scares coming a mile away, they aren’t anything new or interesting, and while people were jumping at moments I found myself sitting quaintly in my seat not really interested as the are the most novel of jump scares. That aside the film does create a genuine tense atmosphere, though it is a shame that the film seems to rely more on jump scares than terrifying its audience with proper tension, which in my opinion is much more frightening than having something jump out at you.
The casting worked rather well and all the cast did the job rather well. I have to say, the ghosts motives are a bit dreary and the end of the film isn’t very good. I am talking about the last-minute of the film, I won’t spoil anything but it isn’t very good. On a whole I found myself enjoying the tense and sombre atmosphere and enjoying Radcliffe’s performance, but that seems to be about it to tell you the truth. I found that much was to be desired in terms of scares.
The cinematography worked well coupled together with low lighting also increased the atmosphere within the film.
I would have preferred that they focused more on atmosphere then jump scares, but saying that I recommend you go and see it if you like to have things jump out at you.
