Telltale Games recently released the Walking Dead game, based on Robert Kirkmen’s popular comic book series. The game tells the story of Lee Everett as he struggles through the post-apocalyptic world he now finds himself in. He becomes the sole carer of a young girl called Clementine who has been split up from her parents as they were out of town when the virus struck.
I have never been a fan of point and click adventure games; I much prefer the all action Zombie slaughtering nature of Left 4 Dead. Although the point and click aspect of the game works well and the interface is smooth. I found the point and click aspect led to a lack of interaction in the action sequences. When you shoot or hit a zombie with a weapon it doesn’t feel as if you actively killed the zombie it feels as though your just standing back telling people what to do.
In spite of this the story line was fantastic, much like the comic book the emphasis is on the character emotions and how they deal with the appending doom. I won’t reveal to much about the story but you run into some characters in the comic book as you play though the game, which is a nice aspect. The story made also has a strong emphasis on choice you can be put in situation in which you have to choose between two people to save. These moments are very dramatic in the game, you are given a small amount of time to choose who to save from the onslaught of zombies. The decision had a direct impact on how the rest of the game pans out so it is important to choose wisely. The comic book style graphics are also really good but are far from perfect. The actual characters themselves are finished really well but some of the background scenery isn’t great.
Overall I really enjoyed playing though the game it was like reading the comic but having an impact on what happens next. The game is going to be in 5 parts and I will most certainly be downloading all of them as the story development keeps players engaged.
Although the story was good the game still wasn’t exciting enough for me so I
am going to give the game a 6/10.
