10. Left 4 Dead
Valve are a company renowned for making games were even the harshest critics have to go HOLY SHIT THATS GOOD. The Half-Life series, Portal, TF2, CCS it just keeps coming. This year we were blessed with L4D. Blessed indeed as this game kicks all kinds of ass. It's one of the weakest Valve games, but that's like saying it's one of the worse LOTR films. This ties with Dead Rising as the best current-gen Zombie killer. The DIRECTOR gives so much replay and nothing build friendships like killing bitches... I mean witches.
Wait for sales.
9. Little Big Planet
Spore was cool. Than LBP came out and said "no, no, no, no, no. THIS is how you do user created content ok. The sheer amount of cool stuff you can make and play in LBP is boggling. Let's see can you recreate:
Mirrors Edge. Yes
MGS 4: Yes
Conception... WAIT WHAT...: Yes (shudders)
Long lasting appeal thy name is LBP.
8. Rock Band 2
RB2 and GH5 are pretty much the same, it really comes down to two things. What songs do you like and do you like playing games without the drums constantly breaking. GH5 only loses out cause of slightly weaker track list and less DLC, as well as some faulty equipment. As my main man Cyrus states : "The massive and wide ranging list of tracks with new ones coming out for download regularly, the more responsive and double button fret area guitars (compared to 'Guitar Hero'), the 'forming a band' aspect with your friends and everyone participating and helping each other out during play...this is THE game." . Thanks now I don't have to think anymore.
7. Gears 2
Gears one is Die Hard, Gears 2 is Rambo 4. Gears 2 drops the silly stuff and gives an actually compelling story, from a Gears game. With the addition horde and more multiplayer it makes the action game to own.
6. Fable 2
I always leave Fable 2 and start thinking it's an cool game nothing great but cool. As soon as I start playing that goes away and I just see AWESOME. A very compelling fantasy world, which I prefer to Oblivion (still love that game thought). Really clever writing and voice acting (shout out to Stephen Fry). I really love these charecters and my good old Dog. I love Indiana.
5. Mirrors Edge
I played the demo and loved it. Read the reviews and was very sad, I decided not to buy it. Then I got it for christmas, and I kicked myself... hard. This is a good fucking game. Good story, no, good characters also no. Something totally new, original and game that perfects the unthinkable YES. Heres the truth I love Mirrors Edge more than any game this year, until a glitch or sensitivity issue rears its ugly head. I want a sequel soon. O and best music of any game, I have all the remixes on my IPod. Ye I'm sad.
4. Far Cry 2
One of the best modern war games ever made. I'm saying this here and now. COD4 single-player ain't got shit on this. This really is a cliche but the game is GTA Africa. Intense fire fights, a fully realized story and world and a plot and strike combat system push this to godliness.
3. Metal Gear Solid 4
I know it's odd to bit odd to have a movie on a top games list, but it's a DAMn good movie, and theres some cool interactive bits too.
OK maybe thats a bit extreme, but why is MGS4 here. Because of the story. Snake's a badass and he's back, with vengeance. And a cane. In the same way Indina Jones, Rocky and Rambo have, i've looked past the age and seen what an amazing adventure with a character I love this is. Cool guns and cool action this is the complete package.
2. Fallout 3
It didn't want to set the world on fire. But with a level of quality like this how could it not. Everyone was hyped from the moment they saw a supermutent's head fly. Did it deliver. Hell to the ye. The VATS kick ass, the guns kick ass the story kicks ass the.. ok fine FALLOUT 3 KICKS MAJOR ASS.
1. Grand Theft Auto IV
If you hadn't guessed by now, i'll assume you just scrolled downwards. But yes GTA IV is number 1, supreme champion, numero uno etc. A very different GTA this one took itself seriously and it paid off. Niko is one of gamings real anti-heroes and just a total due. If games had Oscars, this would be the Godfather.

I agree that the Force Unleashed has its problems, but the story and the cool boss battles are some of the things I like about it. It isn't a perfect game but its certainly not the #1 worst of this year (to me anyways).
Glad that you had MGS4 on your list by the way. That game is sooooooo AWESOME!!!

im not fanboy
mirrors edge filled in a gap in my life where i wanted something completely different to all the FPS and RPG clones that had been thrown my way.
fable 2 was the best fantasy RPG ive played since oblivion and i LOVE fantasy RPG's
Resistance 2 and prince of persia ive never played i here they are good but i cant put something up if it isnt my opinion.
if you think it deserved a place and didnt get one, i probably havnt played it
Force Unleashed isnt no 1 cause its the most broken piece of crap. its not. its there because under a field of worst a level of disappointment like FU has to win. I was SO sure it was going to be my game of the year, a some moments are so brilliant but its embarrassingly short, no real character development except for starkiller and a tacked on romance which is never explained it just happens. its so broken and glitchy and reaks of laziness. go back to the jedi knight series or give me a sequal to Republic Commando, but no more lazy failures.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Too Human have to be the two longest made pieces of crap I have played this year.
However Little Big Planet deserves to be number 1 or 2, but I agree with GTA IV being high on a lot of lists.

Fall Out 3 was an Oblivion clone and Fable 2 was an amazingly fun 4 hr game, but the only real playtime occurs while you try to find another way than cheating to get a million gold to buy the mansion. Better start calling all your friends up, because you will put 100s of hours into being a Blacksmith.

I would agree with your number one except the PC port was probably the single worst port ever handled in human history. So bad the game rates about a 4 out of 10 in most places. If it's just for consoles then generally I would agree.

@Udav: RB2 pedal is waaay better, and the GH guitars for WT are so damn gimmicky that it's sad.
Besides, in RB2, I have OVER FOUR HUNDRED SONGS.
Btw Mirror's Edge is HELLA frustrating, and has a reaaaaaally lame story, sorry.
