In a nutshell, Tony Stark is an endlessly fascinating character, and Downey pulls him off perfectly. He carries all the wit and charm of a Cary Grant even as he carries twice the emotional baggage of a Bruce Wayne.
The direction is strong, too. Granted, there are more cuts than I would like, but far fewer than I've come to expect. Consider the clip I included. Replace the CG suit with a poncho-wearing Clint Eastwood, and you've got a classic Western shootout, complete with him calmly holstering his gun after killing all the villains. (My mistake: Five coffins.)
Favreau approached the material pragmatically, and it's a breath of fresh air when most directors seem to skip the actual directing part and just cut the scenes together at random. It's a great story, well-told, and features some superb performances featuring boundless personality. Most other superhero films seem dead in the water by comparison (with some exceptions, of course).
Absolutely shocked
I don't even know how this got green lighted, or how friedberg and setzer didn't make it.
And yes it's real:

Dear god, how did this film happen!
Remember my disastrous star of a story I posted a while back? Hopefully not.
Anyways, I got a new story that I wanted to share. This is what I plan on using for the end, so I'll explain my idea.
A girl go's missing, and her blood is found all over...
